What is a complicated smoke?

Captain Black Grape puffy

For a hobbyist maybe, for a smoker, not really. It's just tobacco in a pipe.

If you are a member of an online forum where you discuss a particular activity over a period of years, and you personally collect thousands upon thousands of dollars in accoutrements for said activity, then it's safe to say you're a hobbyist.

Now the old farmers who buy tubs of codger burley along with cobs and Grabows at the local discount baccy store here in town, those guys are just smokers.

Yes I understand that the "pipesmoking as hobby" thing is a bit irksome, but the truth is, yes we are ALL hobbyists, or at the very least, tobacco aficianados, and I'm not sure there's any real distinction to be made between the two.

I sort of understand long-term pipe smokers' dislike of the whole "hobbyist, introspective, conversing with the spirits while looking at cloud formations, revitalising an ancient art" thing, but one the other hand most of us here clearly care about what we smoke, what does it taste like etc. Otherwise why not just smoke two packs of Marlboro red a day?

or connoisseurship ... which could be described as taking it to "hobby" level.
does "connoisseurship" sound better?

Not really. After throwing away about 140 pipes last year, and boxing up all but two, I think I'm venturing away from that aspect.

I do. It's just all tobacco to me

A pipe, compared with a cigarette or cigar even
It's all the same to me, just another way to use tobacco along with chewing.

Because some people just love anything complicated.

Like those Rubik's Cube freaks.
Sadly, cubes aren't that complicated.

When I had a Rubik Cube I uncomplicated it by switching them colour labels.
They're no longer labeled, they have colored plastic panels.

Because:

* pipes are easier on your lungs
* pipes are MUCH cheaper
* There is more variety
* pipe tobacco taste better

I'm out on the hobby thing too.. I've used that word to describe my smoking, but I'd say it sarcastically.

I do agree with the OP about refining your technique, and how it brings more enjoyment. I also agree that pipe smoking is a relaxing and enjoyable pastime.. but the point about technique goes for ciggs, chew, cigars, and I don't know from personal experience.. but I'd say the same goes cocaine and heroine. :ROFLMAO:

It's too late now, buddy... you've got thousands of dollars of baccy, have owned hundreds of pipes (and maybe still do), have been on this forum for years, and you're officially a PIPE SMOKING HOBBYIST puffy

I don't like it either, but it's just the truth.

I don't consider my smoking a hobby. I would call it an indulgence.
Some aspects of it, like the learning of various packing methods and maintenance routines could be considered hobby-like, but they're really not. You need to know this stuff in order to be able to enjoy the smoke, so it's just necessary basic knowledge.
The one thing that comes closest to being a hobby for me is trying different blends. I do that, and maybe that is a hobby, but it doesn't feel like it. I also try different foods and beers and coffee blends and to me that's just putting spice on life and avoiding mindless routine.

I started on here to discuss cleaning techniques with Ed James. The tobacco is no more hobby than folks I know with freezers full of cigarette cartons and RYO. It's nicotine addiction.

Peace in the hush of the twilight, balm ere my eyelids close

There is no such thing as just a smoke ?
