Old Advice

I was told that it was a good practice to give wives flowers on days other than Valentine’s Day and anniversaries. I was also told not to quit my day job by my grandfather in regards to my comedic abilities.
The only people that will notice the extra hours you put in at work are your family members.

Keeps your hands out of your pockets while working. Work requires two hands.

Very applicable these days with all the internet buying. First Latin phrase I remember learning, "caveat emptor."
I was fed a lot of what folks consider to be meaningless drivel, adages and old saws. Not surprisingly, most of them are as truly applicable today as they were eons ago. "Words to live by" in many instances.

Fascinating observation. My folks and many who went before were held up as "role models." It's these perceptual differences, the environment in which we were raised, which make our species so interesting. I suppose I was lucky to be reared in an atmosphere which included many, many role models from the historical to the next door neighbors. I did/do still notice that all of my early role models were successful in life. Not necessarily financially but, in raising families, working hard and giving back to the community.
Which was another thing I heard as a lad, "Give back to the community." Which tied in nicely to, "You can't take it with you."

A truism for sure. It was phrased a bit differently but, the meaning is the same.
Here's one I figured out all on my own, I think, "Never trust anyone and you'll never be disappointed. And, sometimes you might be pleasantly surprised." I'm old now so, it is old advice when I pass it on to others.
