The article, "The Mystique of Perique" 1-3-10 can help answer, to some degree the heat factor. As it says most of the Perique that we get is a combination of a burley and of the perique leaf. processed in the traditional manner. Burley in itself tends to burn hot as I found out many years ago smoking old barn tobacco!!! You have to smoke it fairly slow

I sneeze when I smoke perique. I'm glad it's only a sneeze and not the sort of thing rmbittner describes, or what Harris has happen to jim with red VAs, because I love perique.
