I've got nails, both pipe and the ones for wood, and Czechs in drawers and glove boxes, laying around all the places I usually smoke . . . I still, most often use, one of the five different sized tampers (phalanges) on the end of each hand. They're always with me, I haven't lost one yet (very careful in the wood shop)and, as someone pointed out somewhere in the forums, there's a feel to the tamping that using a tool doesn't provide.
After you develop a nice callus on the finger tips you won't find yourself running around, screaming like a little girl when you make contact with a piece of glowing tobacco.

I've got a number of nice tampers, many of them gifts, and I like to use them when I'm at a pipe show or at a store event, but for day-to-day use, I keep a Czech tool with me, or I use the tamper from my lighter, if I remember to carry it. Why? Because I don't want to lose the more valuable tampers.

Regarding this:

You know the saying, we all put our pants on one leg at a time ('cept for showoffs and amputees).

In my case, I still put my pants on one leg at at time. I just leave one of them in the pants.
