I don't think people were disputing Kevin or calling his integrity in question. Quite the opposite, most people had positive things to say about both the site and his rules. We were simply discussing the usefulness or edit functions and their time limits. :nana: Love that GIF yohanan.

I have always just assumed that editing is an ephemeral possibility which is why I stare a hole in my posts before I click the button and immediately thereafter. I catch 99.99 percent of spelling and grammatical errors this way. Attempting to correct errors of judgement is much more problematic.

I think people should just learn to spell! Or,being a like minded gathering, pursuing the same leaf, who cares if someone misspelled a word or their sentence structure is lacking! Read the intent of the post and respond or not!
10 minute edit is 9 min too generous!

Sentence construction, punctuation, etc. are very important in conveying intent. Lack of punctuation, caps etc. can make grasping intent tough and sometimes simply reading a post, a chore.
The smaller edit window demands that I pay more attention before hitting the trigger and sending. In my opinion, that is a good thing. A bit of self-discipline is a good thing.

Do Not Publicly Dispute Moderation Decisions
Discussion is not dispute. Other than that, I have no qualms whatsoever with Kevin's decision, nor for that matter, any of the forum rules here.

I write quickly to form my thoughts and then edit for grandma.]grammergrammar.
What happens without time to edit.
But 15 minutes is plenty in practice.

I, also, would like to see the "edit window" removed, or at least altered. A couple options:
1) Only allow the OP topic to be windowless. This way, if, for example, there are pictures posted, or lists to be managed, it can all be done via the OP post.
2) Go windowless, however, all edits have to be approved by a mod before it is allowed. This way, if it's grammatical, or a picture-link is messed up (as are several of mine when I tried using Google Drive), then those can be easily remedied and submitted for approval. Posts where the subject changes, or an about-face stance on something would not be approved.
The only negative impact for Option 2, would be a greater reliance/work for moderators.

Removing the edit feature is a terrible idea. That would inhibit some people from posting. Some members use a cell phone to type their posts (I am not one of them), and it's easier to make typing mistakes by phone than at a desk or lap top. I think removing the edit feature would inhibit responses from them. I know I would be very reluctant to post in a forum where editing was no option at all. Some people are not going to sit and labor over their posts until they are perfect. Who has that kind of time? And if moderators had to approve all my responses, I'd not be a member of that forum. And I'd not be alone in that. The moderators have enough to do in a job that is often unappreciated. Why create more work, especially the unnecessary kind, for them? This is a benign forum. It needs to stay that way, and wouldn't if your suggestion was taken seriously. Too much chance for chaos for people who wouldn't get paid enough for it.

Just a note. by "windowless", i meant "removing the edit window time limit".. not remove the ability to edit completely. And I also agree that having to submit edits for approval would be tedious for the mod.
I, for one, think that (most) everyone here is mature enough to use a forum properly. If anyone starts to edit their posts in an unjust manner, they should be removed. No sense in a few bad eggs ruining things for the rest of us.

I certainly can agree with JimInks.
But I also agree that I am an undisciplined poster, and that inhibiting people like me might be a good idea.
For me the shortened window is encouraging me to be more disciplined (as Warren was saying above). I was using the edit window to the hilt, rather than being more careful. Heck, it might have BEEN my posts that instigated this policy change.
Part of that is because I have a "shotgun" mind. I sort of vomit all over the thing on the first go. I start out with a novel-sized bunch of ideas in all directions. I go back and trim to a chapter. I go back a third time to get it to 12 paragraphs. Then I reopen it to whack out the middle six.
I’ll read other posts then go back to see if anyone added something to mine. But THEN I go back to editing because I realized my last whack-job introduced errors that make it unreadable.
Then right after hitting POST, I see omitted words and usage errors.
Then... I run out of time.
I don't mind a shorter time window. I'll just write in a text document first. When I'm happy with it, then I’ll copy/paste it. (It’s what I just did now, in fact. And I’ll still probably use up my 10 minute window now... oh, gawd, I'm in it right now.... Oh geez... I'm in it again!.... Now a THIRD TIME!!!... Now I'm up to six times.)
But if I was sending it from a phone -- which I never do -- I'd just choose to be quiet.
(Now people will be sending me phones. LOL … I guess it’s win-win!!!)

I have done the "text/word" editing before posting before as well. But it's too tedious and time consuming.
And as you say, people with shotgun minds, and those with ADD (both are me) might tend to be editing a bit more frequently. However, removing that ability...if I have to choose over constructing everything in Word, or not posting.. chances are, I will simply not post and do something elsewhere.

Some of you guys figured out that the change was made because of someone editing their posts in an unacceptable way.
I wonder how many of you would have even realized the change was made if I didn't say anything.
Ten minutes is still a good amount of time.
I re-read my post before publishing it, and then I read it again after it is published. Sometimes I still have typos, or poorly worded text. I can still catch it in less than ten minutes.
