This. Agree 100%. EMP is a frequent go-to for me, and it took me a bit to figure out how to smoke it just right. When I did, it was night and day. Slow and steady is the key with this one.
I’ll second that as well. The first time I tried I didn’t really like it. But after finding the right cadence it’s a staple in my supply.

Are you smoking it in your early morning pipe??? If you smoke it in your mid to late morning pipe it will naturally taste like hot air and of course if you’re not smoking it in the early morning AND in the wrong pipe it will taste like hot spicy air. Smoking it after lunch will result in a visit from the FBI and you will probably get tongue bite and a weekend in jail.

It’s a very rule based blend. It really ought to have a warning label, but they assumed the name would be self explanatory.

EMP is one of my favorites. I used to enjoy it while doing my occasional commutes into NYC, in a Stanwell 63. It helped make Rt 78 a bit more tolerable.

D&R Ramback Balkan is a similar blend for me, not by composition, but by the fact that it needs to be sipped slowly, at a low combustion temp. I once got a 2 hour smoke, no relights, out of a bowl of EMP while making an early morning drive into Queens, NYC.
Nothing really can make RT 78 any better not even EMP

Sorry, the only time I smoked EMP was in the 80s when Dunhill was still blending it.

It was actually one of my first blends to try/smoke, it was amazing then, not sure if the Peterson’s blending of it comes close to what Dunhill did back then.

But can someone please explain to me what in Gods name is the allure of Early Morning Pipe???
90% of time its like smoking hot air, the other 10% is smoking hot spicy air...
it's not a favorite of mine but it's a mild but nuanced blend. Though that's what is fun about pipes, lots of choices for different people and different moods. And hey a lot of the blends that people adore hit me as just o.k.. Bob's Chocolate Flake to me was a boring boring smoke.

EMP is a nice blend. To me, much better than NightCap. Then again, I just got something against NightCap. Maybe it was due to looking for it too long when Dunhill stopped blending it. Just a total disappointment. But EMP was rather surprisingly good.

EMP is still made by STG, just as it has been for years. Nothing has changed, except the label.

I definitely enjoy EMP. Tasty and great with coffee in the morning. I also love GLP Chelsea Morning and I gravitate towards that mostly because I can buy 8 oz. tins. Wish Peterson would offer EMP and Nightcap in bulk.

But, when Dunhill was on the label, it was offered in bulk. That was why I phrased it that way. I have more than five pounds both of bulk Dunhill Nightcap and EMP in jars. So, I haven't had to buy any since Peterson relabeled it.
Yeah, that was before my time when I started smoking. I feel like I missed out a little bit (not too much) but a little with Dunhill and McClelland blends. I do remember hearing people buying Dunhill in bulk, so that makes sense, but as for Peterson, I've yet to see that. Hope they do at some point! 🤞

There was a difference between bulk and tinned for the Dunhill blends though. Brian on the radioshow talked about them, and if you have a developed palate for those blends you may notice it. But, for the most part all other blends are the exact same between tin and bulk, except for those for some reason.

Whoops, did we just derail the Christmas thread? Ha ha. puffy

I've only had 1 blend that started with the tin and I moved to ordering in bulk, and that's CD Pirate Kake. Although, I don't know if that technically counts since it's just a 1 lb block of what they tin up. Regardless, I'd still order EMP and NC in bulk if it was offered.
