It must have been my grandfather that told me to use nose "grease" to clean the pipe rim after a smoke. To prevent the blackening of the rim, the grease and salt sweat kept the rim clean. "Clean" is probably a relative term when you use bodily secretions on your pipe, but I've always done it and it works like a charm!

it is an oil that nourishes and protects.

Yeah, I much prefer calling it "nose oil". And I think it's more accurate, though when oil becomes grease or grease oil depends on several things including temperature and composition.

My production of same has diminished over the years. Tend to clean rims with micromesh and hot water, then apply nose oil, but batch processing demands mineral oil.
