Please welcome our newest sponsor to PipesMagazine.com - Nording Pipes!
I have two Nording Pipes myself. One is a large Freehand, and the other is the "Wild Boar" in the Hunting series. I really love that pipe. It smokes great, feels great, and it is beautiful and different in it's looks. I was initially attracted to it because of it's white stem.
Nording Pipes is supporting PipesMagazine.com, and they are excellent pipes, so check them out and think about getting one.

As the owner of four Nordings I can attest that thay are all good smokers and the price is right for those of us that do not want to spend more than 100 on a new pipe . They also make higher grades . Maybe some day , too poor right now .LOL

I've got a couple myself.

They are good solid pipes.

Definitely an excellent value.
Congratulations on landing the new sponsor Kevin.

I'm sorry to be a lone dissenter. My first good pipe was a Nording. It would constantly gurgle. I thought it was something I was doing. So I started smoking more dryly, but the gurgling persisted. As I got to know more about pipes, I saw that the holes in the pipe did not line up. That's why with any new pipe you have to run a pipe cleaner through it to make sure it passes.

Docgarr,

With all due respect to your credentials and position(s) within the pipe smoking community -- not to mention the apparent depth of your experience; and without any vested interested in the success of Nording pipes and/or their continued support of this eMag; I think uncollimated shank and stem draft holes may not have been the necessary cause of the gurgling problem you experienced. I have dry-smoking pipes with poorly aligned shank and stem drafts, as well as (occasionally) gurgly pipes that pass a cleaner through effortlessly.
Some other variables to be considered are:
  • gizmos: stingers, plumbing, etc.

    tobacco types, cuts, mixes

    additives: humectants, casings, toppings

    environment: temperature, R.H., air movement

puffing technique, cadence, depth (especially during lighting)

draft length (cooling); shank/stem interface (density & materials, plenums, chambers)

bowl geometry and alignment with shank draft

    wood thickness and temperature gradients

and the biggest suspect: inappropriate packing

There is calculated irony in putting poor inappropriate packing technique last in the list because it is the most notorious source of

(any number of) pipe smoker's problems, and the first thing you should suspect.
Of course, this disagreement will never be resolved absent a thesis quality physics project; but, :) I'm right and you're wrong.

I have at least half a dozen pipes that will not pass the "pipe cleaner test " that smoke cool and dry.

First of thanks for the accolades from cortezattic and I will certainly defer to his knowledge of pipes. That was quite an extensive list of possible problems. I would still contend that the problem was lack of alignment, though as you suggest a scientific study (double-blind not necessary since the subject is an inanimate object), would be better than opinion. However, I would routinely tip the pipe and allow a napkin to absorb all the moisture that was collecting at the end of the mortise. It was a system pipe in the making!
I would also still contend the pipe cleaner test is a good idea. If you are going to spend all that money for a pipe it ought to be engineered well.

Docgarr,

Thanks for your cordial response. With respect to a possible engineering/design flaw, I have a post-1998 Ben Wade Ovation, by Duncan Briars of London (in fact, made in the Dunhill shop). It is a machine made, mass produced mid-grade at best. The shank and stem drafts do not align. I concede to you, it is a major PITA.
But the entire mortise area is so cleanly and precisely machined it appears to be intentional; and I noticed that the small plenum thus created functions to trap loose bits of tobacco that get sucked in. I don't know if that was the design goal, or merely an incidental consequence. But it is a dry-smoking pipe, and I am still quick to suspect packing problems first and foremost.

Frank, that's a great idea. Maybe that can even be extended to a tobacco buying club.

GREAT IDEA! Now there's something Iowa Phil shoulda thought of a long time ago.
Maybe Docgarr, with his extensive pipe club / organizational background can add some ideas.

A discount sounds nice, I'm Fing broke and like the looks of a lot of the Nording pipes. Oh well, is good to dream, I suppose.

If anyone has gurgling pipes they need to quit spitting and slobering into the stems .Maybe NASA can look into this after they figure out the Toyota fiasco .Until then remember to swallow not spit . lol

And that's exactly what I thought. The gurgling was caused by the way I was smoking. That Nording was the first good pipe I owned (even though the Grabow didn't gurgle). So I thought it was me. I became more conscious about how I smoked and it taught me to smoke more dryly. However, as I collected more pipes, none of the other pipes gurgled, except that one.
