My experience is the opposite. I have had conversations and way more people loathe cigarettes, but have more tolerance for pipe smoke. But then, I live in the people's republic of WA.
Same here. People always say “oh that smells so good” or “smells like my grandpa’s pipe” etc.

Cigar smoke smells like a burning dong.

Maybe it's business caters to smokers..

If pipesmagazine was a place of business, should smoking be allowed in there?
There are only certain businesses where it’s fully prohibited like a restaurant or bar. Others still have a choice. I don’t believe it should be allowed in a restaurant ever. In a bar, I could care less because no one “needs” to be in there drinking. Though a few people smoking can drive away business.

just like in Chicago you can smoke in Iwan Ries.. it’s their choice as the owners of the building since they don’t serve drinks or food.

Why should there be a law..? Businesses can choose to implement any rule that they like in their place of business, with the exception of protected situations.. smokers aren't protected.
Insurance discounts. The product of individual freedom in the healthcare market.

In the semi-rural NorthEastern USA
There are here too really. The main targets are bars, restaurants, and businesses that choose to participate.
it's funny because most businesses like bars and restaurants could totally have a smoking section however the law is written obtusely enough you can't feel 100 percent comfortable with it and there aren't enough smokers to help and enough non smokers for it too hurt the bottom line. It kind of reminds me of when I worked for a supermarket that stopped selling tobacco. Externally it's a health thing. Internally it just wasn't profitable to waste store space on a product that doesn't sell quickly.

Agreed. I don't really see any reason why, on balance, a business owner should not be allowed to decide whether smoking is allowed on their privately-owned premises. It really shouldn't matter what type of business it is. Of course there is always the "public health" catch all, but as we've discussed recently in another thread, "public health concerns" can be used to regulate just about anything you can think of, notwithstanding the fact that second hand smoke studies are utterly bunk, every bit as bad as the big tobacco "research" from the mid 1900's showing that tobacco use was "perfectly safe"... basically, just a bunch of propaganda. Professor Brad Rodu at University of Louisville has published plenty of information on the truth about moderate pipe and cigar use, and taking into consideration his findings that there is only nominal health risk from moderate pipe and cigar use, I have a hard time believing that "second hand smoke" is a real concern.

Exactly, that's a contradiction. Plus a couple of generations were all secondhand smokers.

Not that other people should be forced to breathe smoke.. but if they hate the fact that Waffle House is a smoking restaurant they can go across the street to the non-smoking, Hypothetical Pancake Hut.. if society puts forth a demand for a non smoking diner, one will show up. If that demand is strong enough.. Waffle House will ban smoking too..

I say, let the customers decide. That's just how I see it.

The customers have decided. That’s why most places are non smoking. We are a tiny tiny segment of the population that no one gives a fuck about.

And that’s not true about second hand smokers. Most people around here don’t smoke and haven’t since the 1950s. Down south maybe this is a different story but up here smokers are a tiny tiny minority and have been since I was born.

They decided so hard that they enacted laws to prevent anyone from contradicting their preferences. Probably fair to call the hardcore anti-tobacco crowd the Original Karens.
Correct. Just like seatbelt laws, motorcycle helmet laws, firearm laws and the like.

I say we all go fully auto with our M16s while we do jumps without seatbelts in our Ford Broncos ... preferably with an open container.

just saying.
I agree with some of the non-smoking laws. Others are out of whack like saying you can’t smoke in a park.

At the same time what if your preference is to not inhale smoke when you don’t want to? Now you have infringed on someone else’s right so where is the line?

No, don't get me wrong. I agree totally. I was only saying laws that make it illegal to allow smoking in your place of business are unnecessary. If any laws should be passed about things like this, and I personally don't believe they should... that should be done at the local level, not the state or federal level.

Bottom line.. like my lawyer said, these laws and ordinances are the product of a flock of karens.
