I truly miss the days when you could walk around places and smell different tobaccos. Some were good and some were horrible. I was smoking a Padron cigar one time in a crowd of people and this gentlemen turned around and said the cigar smelled fantastic and he was not a smoker. Just goes to show you...

The "no pipes" thing goes way back. While the smell of cigs and cigars bother a lot of people, it's a familiar, predictable smell.

Pipe casings and toppings can be ANYTHING, though, and business owners who see their revenue dropping because some guy insists on smoking grape aniseed vanilla licorice mint chocolate fish oil surprise tend to get categorical about pipes.

I agree. All you have to do is go to a pipe club meeting to experience the problem firsthand; the room note is absolute chaos. Don't bother trying to be "mister sophisticated" with your vintage McCranies when there's someone next to you blasting away on Corncob Pipe and a Button Nose. You're just wasting your precious leaf.

I've heard a few people say that shop owners and even a few cigar smokers in lounges look a bit askance at pipe smokers. Shop owners make less money on pipe tobacco than they do on cigars, and I think that's a decent sized part of it for some places. Dunno what the stogie smokers' problems are.

I have been to a bar in San Marcos where the staff was hesitant about me smoking a pipe. Literally everyone in that joint either had a cigarette or a cigar hanging out of their mouths so I was quite surprised by their hesitation. They just told me to stay in the far back and it shouldn’t cause too much trouble. I thought it was really odd.

Most places I’ve seen the ban goes cigars hand in hand with pipes...

I do recall the look on the manager and staff’s faces about 25 years ago at a Ruth’s Criss steakhouse when I finished my meal, pulled out a Cohiba and ordered more wine... They were accommodating, but there was that underlying sense of tension, like how long is it going to take you to finish that and get the f—k outta here.

There have been a few times in a similar situation I've told the server that we're excellent tippers and we were going to stick around a while. Then, made sure that the tip was worth it.

That could be the reason at restaurants. The duration of the smoke vs a cig.

A bartender got crabby with me once about smoking a pipe (it was Captain Black Dark, he said it smelled like incense)...I was a bit taken back because the band had filled his bar on an otherwise dead night, however, I gladly complied and didn't smoke.

Nowadays, I smoke straight Virginias to better blend in with people smoking cigarettes and haven't caught anything but a curious eye here and there. ...really though, I rarely take a pipe out of the house unless I am smoking on the commute.

I've never seen or heard of anything like this either. I actually smoke in coffee shops and stuff around here, because most interpret the smoking bans to cigarettes and not pipes. I always ask, but usually people are happy to let me smoke my pipes, and almost always compliment the aromas of my Virginias.
Lol oh the south. THE PIC SHOWS A CIG THATS ALL I UNDERSTAND

Do you think most Starbuck employees really care about these rules? Most just want to get their hours in and go home. It's way easier to just comply with a customer (or turn a blind eye) than chose to do that thing that is going to make your day more difficult. At least until a Karen walks in and wants to start twisting arms and making people follow rules and shit. People who just blindly follow or enforce rules are the worst forms of human beings anyway. As long as I am being pleasant and courteous, I find that most people will compliment my pipes and approve of them being smoked.

Like you smoke them inside the place? Or on a patio?
