I recently acquired 2 ounce tins of Haddo's Delight and Barbary Coast in my newest TAD order. These are the first G.L Pease blends I have ever smoked. I had high hopes for these blends when I first heard about them. From the reviews I read, I was sure I was going to like them. It turns out that I don't, at least not yet.
I get bad tongue, nose and throat bite when I smoke either one of these blends. I have never had reoccuring tongue bite from ANY blend I have ever smoked until now. Peterson's, Dunhill, Gawith, etc, nothing has ever burned me like this stuff. I thought it might be because of the topping or how moist it was so I dried them out for several hours. This did nothing.
I've been smoking both of them for several days now and I'm still not liking either one of them much. I take smaller puffs and experiment with different pipes but the bite is still present. I'm wondering if any of you have had similar experiences with these blends. I know a lot of you on here like them a lot. Maybe I can find someone willing to trade these for some other Pease blends I might like.

Sounds like something in your body chemistry doesn't agree with those two blends.

Perhaps you are allergic to some component in the blend.
The only real connection I see between them besides being Pease blends are that they both contain liquor as flavouring agents.
Perhaps you can try a "straight" Pease blend and see what you think. And if all else fails, age them. Who knows - it could make a difference...

Haddo's doesn't have alcohol casing, but they do both contain Perique.

Aging will mellow them, but it sounds like a case of true tongue bite (as opposed to burn), which is chemical. GL Pease seems to love Red VA, which gets some people. You may want to get some sample blending tobaccos. Burley, Perique and a selection of VAs (Yellow, Red, Stoved) and see what is whacking you. It's fun to exepriment like that anyway.

This is interesting, as I was just looking at trying a Pease for the first time and was looking at both of those, but leaning towards Barbary Coast. I'll see if I get the same effect. Brownbilliard asked about a different Pease blend to try, and simenon recommended a 'straight' Pease blend...what would be a good counterpoint to Barbary Coast to compare it to?

Lacking a tobacconist, call P&C and they'll hook you up with the baccys. Not a lot of variety on the website, but they will make sure you get what you want. I love those guys.

+1000. The Red Va in Pease Blends, of the same crop as the one used by C&D ( which I think produces Mr Pease's blends ), gives me a reaction from the light tingles to a full-on tongue scorch which usually goes away after a couple hours. I got tongue bite from C&D Star of the East which has so much Lat in it one would get a sore throat before they got a mouth burn if they were puffing too fast ......
Interestingly enough, GLP Westminster, which has roughly the same ingredients as Star of the East doesn't bother me .....

@ mangers: do you know for certain that Haddo's doesn't use a liquor for casing or topping?

To me, it seems to have a flavor identical to Two Friend's (Tarler & Pease) Valle Crucis, which does have a ginger wine or liqueur topping.

I think Cairo does too.

Go to Pease's Website and look at his descriptions of his blends, there is no mention of alcohol.
Haddo's Delight is a stout blend of several Virginia tobaccos with a generous measure of long-cut Perique. Unflavored Green River black Cavendish and a little air-cured white Burley ribbon provide fullness, body, and a bit of extra strength. Finally, an exclusive process darkens and marries the mixture, and gives the blend a subtle tin aroma of cocoa and dried fruit. The flavor is full on the palate, earthy, slightly sweet and intriguingly piquant, with overtones of figs and raisins. A wonderful blend for the Perique lover!

I thought I read somewhere along the line that Haddo's had an alcohol casing of some sort.
My bad, if I"m mistaken in that. It might have been tobaccoreviews so who knows what you'll read there...

I'm so sorry for you! BUT MORE FOR ME!!!
This thread title seemed blasphemous to me! Unless I get something at a show or as a rare gift, I only regularly purchase Pease blends, or English Chocolate...which is half Pease

VINDICATION IS SO SWEET! ;)
Looking forward to smoking Haddo's sometime, it definitely sounds like it is loaded with flavour...
In general, I haven't had too many Pease blends but I did enjoy the ones I did try. And I'm willing to take a chance on the ones I haven't sampled.

Both those blends contain Burley, Virginia, and Perique. You could be reacting to any number of things.
Yep. I agree. Burley and Perique (which is in the Burley family) both have high nicotine, which is another possibility for the negative experience you had.

I'm on the phone with Greg now. Haddo's has rum in it.

Well we learn something new every day, and i stand corrected! That should be mentioned in the tin description!!

VA/Perique blends don't sit well with me in general.
Don't go writing off GLP blends just based on those though. His are some very high quality tobaccos.
