Good call that leads to an informal poll. How many of you listen to Lil Darkie? That's one that's popular with the youth these days. Name notwithstanding, a semi-competent lyricist and rapper.
as far as innovation I would throw Death Grips in the mix and Rappers who work with Rattatat too

It's not just music...everything's gotten worse.

I'm sure many will scoff at this, which I'm quite used to, but my pet theory is the "4th turning" thing. There are always talented and creative writers and musicians, but there are a lot more of them during an awakening cycle. And part of the equation is the audience as well...during those periods, all consciousness is raised, and there is more of a demand for authenticity, substance and meaning...so the "pop culture" in general elevates to higher level...a rising tide lifts all boats.

Some of those who are considered great artists are at least in part just lucky that they happened to be doing their thing during one of those cycles. It makes it much easier to be both artistically and commercially successful at the same time. The collective consciousness is more energized and at a higher "frequency"...so it makes it a lot easier for a talented, creative person to tap into it.

Most of the '60s and '70s were part of an awakening cycle, which IMO has a lot to do with the explosion of so much great music during those years...and why it has such longevity.

Metal bands rarely sound metal these days.
I often get the feeling that modern metal bands try to emulate something from days gone with the resulting sound something like lukewarm air or plastic microwave-metal. There's just no gasolene in it.

I agree with a lot of this, one could Point to the 80's New wave, No Wave, the birth of Hip Hop, and then the 90's Grunge and "Alternative". There were New Sounds/Movements happening on a large scale with lulls imbetween and it seems that the underground trends are not making it to radio and dying out or morphing so quickly now that "pop" radio is left with just total garbage. And yes this can be seen in other disciplines as well lets not even get started with fiction and film ;)

I believe that most artist played on the radio are handpicked by the industry to perform the industries music. The music is written in a way to dumb down the population or elicit a desired response by the industry or those really in charge. Rarely do musicians become famous that do not have the backing of a certain power. And i’m talking famous as in radio play, TV music videos, social media following etc. You can still be famous without that stuff. But it all comes when the musician is chosen and they strap the rocket to them, so to speak

There is always good art of all kinds being made by all sorts of people around the world. The way people consume music is more fractured than ever before so finding new music you enjoy can be difficult. That said, I think many people would agree that the ‘top hits’ of today are garbage. I firmly believe that the streaming numbers for many of these hit songs are being artificially inflated.

The interesting thing is, the '80s and '90s were an unraveling cycle...which fits well with what was happening then...especially all the Grunge and alternative stuff.

Totally agree, same thing with "Punk" it's a bunch of Genre Sub Genre stuff and it all calls back to the real innovators from back in the day. I remember a Mike Patton interview where he made fun of a Modern Classic Rock band think it was Black Crowes, lemme see.

couldn't find it but here he's abusing Wolfmother
