Soooo you are not going to point us to these amazing underground bands?
You brought up the underground when the article brought up pop even in the title, strawman much?
Professionals what, Artist, Promoter, Record Producer?
I'm trying to have a conversation and jesting your replies stink of reddit.
DAX, Oliver Anthony, The Doo to name 3. You came at me as if you didn't actually want an honest answer, just a validation of your feelings. The problem is that ABBA didn't break ground, they just rode a wave ant that's now considered innovative.

that last one through me for a loop ,

The Doo

The DOO?

Guess our understanding of underground is different.

I just thought the article was interesting as a joke and I'm talking about the radio not as a young vs old thing just the actual quality of melody, counterpoint, timbre/beat/tempo diversity, lyrical poetics. I feel we are at a low point in the coaster ride and wondering if it will snap back like it did with New wave in the 80's and God forbid Grunge and " Alternative" in the 90's seems pretty static ATM. Seems the rollercoaster might be broken.

Taylor Swift, 54.4 million subscribers

And these are not the top of the pop stars right now.

So, since you haven't heard of The Doo, it can't be underground...

What is underground in your mind?

And yes, the rollercoaster is broken

And I'm reallly not being a jerk when I say radio in and of itself is young vs old. Spotify on the other hand...

Pop music is, always has been, and will always be over engineered disposable garbage produced to harvest money. Good music is still being made by real musicians and songwriters. Like anythin

this is the last underground band that was really breaking ground for me and the album was made in 1999

I thought Dirty Projectors did something Interesting and they broke big played some late night shows but were very underground for a long time I'm wondering if there is anything innovating that hard right now I'd love to hear it.

It's not often that I hear modern pop. I just don't seem to run in those circles. But when I do, it's not uncommon for me to recognize a part of the song that was "sampled" from a 60s, 70s or 80s song that I recognize.
It's like the modern pop that I encounter is regularly built around (on top of) the riffs from music that I grew up with.

There is but it's all down to personal perception. What I consider underground, you may consider mindless hacks and vice-versa. I could put out my favorites but you may not see them the same.

Final name. Mono Neon

yeah but more kids these days listen to a lot more then the radio stuff. Even the boring kids.
Good call that leads to an informal poll. How many of you listen to Lil Darkie? That's one that's popular with the youth these days. Name notwithstanding, a semi-competent lyricist and rapper.

Pop is what it is, regardless of generation. Each generation just has its own sound, you like it or you don’t.

Bands have been pulling Melody from previous generations as well for decades. The practice is much older than me.

There are also some good cases for the loss of dynamic range, sad as that may be. I spent a number of years with hard RMS requirements for the deliverables I worked on. I think LUFS have mostly replaced that, but all the same, it does provide a standardized listening consistency to the end user especially around various broadcast and streaming platforms. One program won’t blow your ears out because the prior was so dynamic you cranked it to hear. A lot of that has driven over processing and compression habits over the past few decades, fortunately and unfortunately. If you want your program distributed on most platforms, you’ll have specific LUFS targets to hit.

That and the tight frequency bands allocated for each instrument. Great point there.

Yeah I mean if your intent is to exclusively distribute your program on a vinyl, by all means remove “compression” from your vocabulary and have fun. If you want any type of modern distribution though, say hello and find a way to squeeze it all in there.

I do think the immersive space can help as it offers you……space…..for a lack of a better explanation. Some fail at it, others make good use. I do believe it can be used to help open an experience up that otherwise could be fighting from limited ranges.

Didn't Zappa say something to the effect of "all the good music has already been written by the dead guys in wigs".

I also remember hearing an interview with Metheny and when the subject of composition came up he said "compared to Bach we all suck."

NOW get off my lawn. :col:

I think the derivation of “Moon Unit” is from an old tale involving Haydn, a chambermaid and a bath. 😉
