Hey mate, the black is still there, it is under the oxidization. An hour or so of elbow grease will bring it back to shiny black again.
Last night I put the stem in oxy clean for 3 hours and then went to town with a magic eraser. It turned out alright so I decided to try the bleach and water trick, I put it in 4/1 water/bleach mixture and when I woke up this morning its a nice dark rich black color. I couldn't be happier, I'm going to get some carnuba and wax up the bowl and the stem I'll post a picture when i'm done

Cheers

Just to revive this thread for a bit....
I also picked up a similar pipe this week except instead of a smooth finish it is carved. Also, the stem has what looks to be "CPF Chesterfield". The bowl has a clear spot in the carving with a clover leaf logo but says "Selkirk" under it.
It's the "Selkirk" I'm having trouble getting information on. It's a town in New York, so I'm wondering if that's related. Does anyone know anything about Chesterfield Selkirks such as dates of production? I'm curious if it's from the 1920's or '30's.
I won the Ebay auction at $17.49. The pipe was very dirty, took a lot of cleaning, both bowl and stem. The bowl was just about 3/4 occluded with cake which tells me this old pipe has seen lots of use. It's looking pretty good now after an afternoon of restoration. Draw is good. I'll probably fire it up tomorrow night.

Did that Yellow Bole come with a stinger? I think the current YB's have stingers that are easily removable, so

perhaps this came with a stinger that long ago was slipped off.

Nice pipes. I can't smoke a big pipe as it tires me out, but I have a small yello-bole, and it smokes great. Never any moisture at all at the bottom of the bowl. I don't use the stinger, just because it didn't seem to do anything but make it harder to pass a pipe cleaner.

Tuold your pipe is from the time when kbb bought cpf and as things usually go the parts got mixed and matched what you have is a KBB selkirk with a cpf chesterfield stem. This was more common when cpf was being phased out so sometime after 1915 is when your pipe was made.

Thanks lifeon2. This old pipe is a survivor and will occupy a prominent spot in my collection. Maybe it will make it through another century!

Sorry for the late post, but I just ran across this today.
The Selkirk was a KBB pipe introduced in 1925. It was marketed as a response to "...robust demand on the part of smokers for heavily carved pipes". It came in fourteen styles, each made out of antique carved briar. Each pipe was fitted with an aluminum tube and retailed (in 1925) for $1.00.
Lifeon's theory about how the CPF stem got onto the KBB bowl could well be right. I don't know enough about that transition to have an opinion.
Regardless it's a beautiful pipe!

I should add, based only on negative evidence, that I'm a little skeptical that "Colossus Pipe Factory" was ever an independent business. It isn't listed in any of the NYC directories that I consulted from 1880-1898 (by which time it's domiciled at the KBB address). Of course it could have been too small to merit a listing, but it's also possible that CPF was only a d/b/a for KBB.
