I think I am progressing as many before me. Moved through heavy topping flavored Burley / Cavendish blends. Stepped more into Virginia friendly blends and like it better. Found my daily go to is Carter Hall, then my second in rotation is Autumn Evening. WOW I have a a rotation!! That’s exciting to say. ?Hey no small feat for being a pipe smoking imbecile just 5 weeks ago.

So as I enjoy these blends and continue to seek more Virginia aromatic blends I am ready to carefully try some Latakia, Orientals, or Perique. From a previous inquiry most indicated it does not matter whether I go VaPer or English first. However I want baby steps on the strength and having trouble finding information about how much of each make up a blend (%). Are blenders required to provide it? Is there a secret decoder ring or website that provides it?

I do have Early Morning Pipe that I have read has anywhere from 8-20% Latakia. I am wanting to try, but before I do I would like to know for sure and whether other blends are milder?

I am from Texas and know me some BBQ sauces, so maybe this is an unnecessary concern, but would rather start with the lowest % blends and work into it.

Thanks

There isn't a place to find the % composition of individual blends. Check out TobaccoReviews.com, sometimes reviews there will provide some indication of the strength of blend components. However, everyone responds differently to a given blend. one person may not detect the Latakia, while another will assess it's unbearably Latakia forward. IME Early Moning Pipe is on the mild end of Latakia blends, YMMV. Give it a try, if it's not to your liking cellar it for another day.

If you like Carter Hall, you should be looking at mild burley based tobaccos. Carter Hall is burley. You might want to try Sir Walter Raleigh, Granger or Velvet. All of those are "Codger Blends" that are mild burley tobacco. If you want to try mild Latakia then perhaps you would like Sutliff's Match Holiday Mixture or Match Revelation. Both can be bought in 1 oz. samplers to try.

Thanks. I have tried SWRA (not regular) and it’s ok but CH is better to me. I like Velvet in between those 2 blends. I have not tried Granger but saw some reviews where is almost identical to SWR but I will try it if I can get small pouch.

I have seen the Match Holiday but was again not aware of % of Latakia. But just read it again and it states “If you're looking for an all-day Latakia blend, MARCH - Holiday Mixture is right up your alley.”. So that probably means it’s mild based on the All Day reference. Thanks

I recommend you give Mississippi River by Seattle Pipe Club a try. It's a friendly blend!
Oh, and just as a separate recommendation, I think you would be wise to get yourself a corncob pipe to devote to your exploration of the latakia blends. Hell, having a cob dedicated to any blends that have really strong aromas isn't a bad thing, that way you don't ghost up a briar while you are experimenting. But, Your Mileage May Vary.

It's probably Luxury. Sometimes I have CRS. ?
Thanks. I found the Luxury one and going to try it. I made me a wish list on PC and just nailing down about 6 total to try. My birthday is 2/5 so wifey know I want tobacco. The shipping is only $6 but I want to maximize my bang for buck in one order.

Good idea on dedicated cob. I have 3 of them and was considering dedicating 1 to wet aromatics, 1 to Virginia / VaPer, and another to Latakia/English. I want to get a 4th for my everyday Carter Hall.

I have decided not to pursue a briar yet. I need to buy and try more tobaccos and am on limited budget. I am going to be patient using my cobs for everyday. Then for Christmas let my family get a couple $100 Briars.

Read jiminks reviews on TR and he talks about what tobacco lead in a blend or trail. Probably one of the best sources for figuring out what is in a blend as his palate is very sensitive at detecting components.

I don’t know if it’s just me, or others see this too? Hmm ?

I feel like there’s a clock ticking, on either getting things figured out, or trying to find your way.

Forget about time Smoking, your tastes might change, unless, no offense to those that are, you’re just a Budweiser drinker, always have been, always will be, you have no care for other beers. But, with all the tabac you’re going after, you don’t seem like the Bud only type.

So, you’re tastes in blends will probably change, the more you sample out there, especially as a new smoker.

Two years later, just when I thought I loved a particular blend, another awesome one comes around... LOL... ?

Just enjoy and take it easy, stay on the Hobbit Villa Fields Easy Lane, not the Pacific Coast Highway California mad rush! ;)

Sounds like a good plan. Move at a comfortable pace, and stay within your budget. It's all about enjoying the process, friend.

You raise a good question. If I find a couple blends I like today and keep sampling and expanding my horizons could I mess up my enjoyment of those couple of blends. Maybe I should spend a good month (or tin) just enjoying a couple I have found and slow my sampling down? Not sure.

Would you do the same thing with food? If you enjoy the blend right off the bat, I think it makes sense to spend time with it and get to know it better. Just like fine spirits, good music, or new relationships.

However, I feel like if it starts off in the "tastes like heated yak musk" category, put it in a jar and trade it to somebody.
