Good Afternoon, I'm Dave from The Big Easy. I've collected Pipes here and there for almost 35 years, starting with my Papaws pipe when he passed. I have a corn cob, a couple Ben Wade's, Preben Homes, Savenelli's, Stanwell's, Caminetto's and my favorite is an Il Cepo. I've smoked cigarettes for years, and I'm afraid my taste pallet hasn't yielded over to the taste of pipe tobacco yet. I'm working on that now. I've tried samples of different tobacco's so far an ounce of this or that, usually I smell the aroma of a tobacco, and pick from that. I remember well my Pawpa smoking his pipe, and as a child I loved the smell of pipe tobacco burning. I'm totally new to smoking a pipe, however I wanted to get away from the nasty stench of cigarettes. I've learned from you tube, how to pack a pipe bowl, and how to light it, and after the initial light and burn, how to tamp it and relight it. I've noticed at the bottom of the bowl always seems to have a bit of very moist tobacco left. I'm really wanting to make the transition from cigarettes to my pipe, because I love the aroma. Any help, any suggestions, any ideas and all feedback would be greatly appreciated. From the school of hard knocks, I've learned to never remove a stem from a warm or hot pipe, and would love to learn the To Do items as well as the Never to do Items, such as things that would damage or destroy my pipe, again any help, ideas, or feedback would be greatly appreciated. My favorite color is a couple shades darker than Turquoise, I've never tried the blend 79..... and I'm contemplating joining a club online, where you try a different blend each month. I refuse to shop in a Head Shop for Pipe Tobacco, and usually have to drive 35-40 miles one way for pipe tobacco. Shopping online would probably be easier for me than 70-80 mile round trip drive. Again, Thank You for accepting a Newbie to your site, and I look foreword to reading and learning more, as well as participating when I can. Thank You.

there has to be a good pipe shop closer. either that or it's not the wonderful city I believe it to be. Stiill great and all

I live 35-40 miles northeast of the city, in what they call the Northshore, I have a head shop bout 25 minutes from me, and we use to have a smoke Rings in our mall, but it's been closed now for years. I did find through a google search last Saturday a very small shop closer to me, which he offered to order nearly anything I needed, of course at a different price than I can order them online for. He had about 18 blends of tobacco, which were between $3.50 to $7.00 an ounce, and they had maybe 50 new and used pipes on the wall, Dr Grabows for $50 Bucks, and some no name estate pipes for as much as $175. So I would say fairly expensive, very limited supplies, pipe knocker were $5 bucks each. That said, I think I would be much better off shopping online. Only thing is, When I buy a pipe, I like to feel the weight, view the briar very well, and I like a big bowl, My fingers are huge, and I pack my pipe using the packing in layers method, and I dislike a pipe bowl I cannot get my finger in. Thats just me, and I'm self admitting that I am no expert by a long ways. I do love the sweet taste of the smoke in my mouth and around my tongue, and I really enjoy a bowl that I can pack and smoke for 30-45 minutes without the bowl getting hot.

Thank You Trout. My Pawpaw is gone, so it's not as if I can seek his council. I LOVE the sweet smell of Pipe Tobacco in my pipe burning. I've sought out YouTube character Mutnchop video's and how too's. Of course without having a pipe shop close, there's really no Pipe clubs to join. For that reason is why I've joined your group, to read and learn from those with a similar desire.

Hello and welcome!
I also converted over from cigs and here are some things you may find useful to taper off:
  • stop buying factory cigs. Learn to roll your own with quality tobacco to help control your usage. You can mix RYO and burley pipe tobacco for some interesting smokes that smell great.
  • "codger" blends are mild enough to inhale should you feel the need to. At least learn how to French inhale to get the flavor then try retrohaling to bybass the lungs and extract even more.

When I started 4 months ago I found myself smoking a lot at the start as I was used to huffing cigs but was really just scorching through the tobacco. It took some time to develop the technique to actually taste the tobacco instead of just producing smoke so, keep at it and I'm sure you'll find yourself reaching for a pipe more often. puffy

May have to check Amazon for a machine that rolls cigarettes, then give the idea a shot, Thanks.

Get the manual machines to roll it by hand then you can customize the paper, filter, size etc. The automatics roll too loose and use special prefab tubes... The point is to make cigs less convenient to use but if you do want one, each cig you roll will take some effort to get right. When I have the option to do so, sometimes I just smoke a small pipe of Virginia instead.

Welcome! My daughter lives in Covington, so we get there a couple a times per year, the Northshore is a place I could live!
The New Orleans pipe club was pretty active, and met in Meterie, might want to check them out. I believe they've posted here in the club section.
A few weeks ago, we were in town. I stopped at the Mayan Import Co on Magazine, they had a pretty decent tin selection with reasonable prices.
