New Year’s Lunch with Three Mates

A blokey, simple no fuss, no cooking lunch to catch up with 3 mates

Anchovy gildas with a Fino

Foie gras on toast with an ox heart tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad
With a German spatlese

Single farmyard Swiss Alpine cheese, panforte and Eccles cakes
With a Banyuls

Sicilian cassata, chocolate truffles and coffee to finish

The plan was to adjourn to the front verandah or the patio in the backyard for a couple of bowls after the cheese

The wife decided to join us for coffee.

And chatted. And chatted. And chatted

So that last item on the agenda went up in smoke


It was a lovely catch-up

Yup. An heirloom variety of large tomato.
Meaty with excellent flavour unlike the tasteless hydroponically grown pretenders available in supermarket shelves these days
Great in a salad with good olive oil, sprinkle of salt and pepper and torn (not cut) basil leaves. Wine vinegar optional

Have to be passionate about tomatoes
So much of supermarket veggies and fruit are mass produced and bland.
Unfortunately a lot of “market stalls” sell produce bought from wholesale markets rather than produce from their own farms

My wife loves tomato's to the point she took the hide off her throat and had to get prescription medicine. I gotta tell her about these luxury tomato's. She's definitely gonna wanna try a bucket full. lol Or maybe not she'll end up back at the doctors office saying my throat hurts. lol

Interestingly I get reflux and heartburn with canned tomatoes.
My wife is careful only to buy organically grown ones with no additives but that makes little difference.
Thankfully no adverse reaction with fresh tomatoes

I'm gonna pass that info on to her. Thanks! Maybe organic she can go back to destroying them with no ill affects.

My wife used to be mildly allergic to tomatoes, heartburn and reflux, sore throat, even skin rashes, but when she was pregnant the first time it fixed it, the issues went away completely and she eats tons of tomatoes and tomato products now.
