BTW, Gareth, I checked out your photography site. Very nice stuff!
I did a good deal of film photography in my youth and got very comfortable with film cameras. Currently I struggle with learning how to convert to digital. Nothing comes easy in this format even though my Fuji x10 allows for manual shooting.
Enjoy your time here and take advantage of the enormous body of info that members are more than willing to share.
Post your photo work here!
Thanks for the suggestions and thanks for taking a look at my photos! :) Glad you like.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. So...I did buy a pipe but sadly i will be sending it back. It really jumped out at me when i saw it on the page but when it arrived the combination of the high gloss bowl and the acrylic mouth piece just didn't work for me. On paper the pipe itself looked very art deco in its styling and really appealed to me. Sadly in person it looked kind of cheap. Like it was made of plastic. Very disappointed. It would have maybe looked better with a subtle bit of grain in the wood on the bowl. Anyway...I'm going to re-visit the list.Pearl-186.png

Personally, I’d select a straight billiard of quality in your price range. Savinelli & Peterson are great places to re-start your search once you’ve sent that “art-deco”piece back where it came from. Concentrate on good drilling & mouth feel. Excited for you and look forward to seeing what you’ve selected. ☕

I lucked out on my first pipe bought new at Tinder Box under their St. Ives house brand. I still have it, from the 1970's, and it looks good and smokes well. It's a smooth bent pot with a unique vertical saddle stem, probably sourced from Comoy. I'd been watching my dad smoke a pipe since my infancy, so I probably had unknowingly developed some judgement in the matter.

The concentric circle rim and matching accent by the stem are a nice touch. The gloss finish and matching stem separated by the ring is cool—I can see why you chose this. It's a shame it didn't live up to what you expected once in hand. Good luck on the continued hunt!

I hope this experience doesn't put you off Vauen. They really are a good brand and make good pipes. It is truly difficult to buy something like this online. Unfortunately, there isn't a Super Pipe Shop that we can go to that sells every pipe, so that we can see them in real life and "try them on for size."

Good luck in your search.

So...The final selection was the Savinelli 616 foresta. It's arrived and i love the shape. Nice big bowl and feels great in the hand. I think next time I'm going to jump on the train up to the C.Gar's Ltd shop in London. I do like this pipe but i've realised how important it is to see the pipe in person and seeing as i'm so close to London it would be worth while taking advantage of that. Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help!

A nice-looking pipe! Yes, seeing a pipe, in person, is definitely the way to go!
