While its not yet suggested; look at estates (pre owned pipes if you haven't seen that term before, not even necessarily pre-smoked, there are also unsmoked estates) from a reputable source like smokingpipes.com . I have 2 estate briars from smokingpipes.eu and they are better smoking pipes for me than a Peterson I had. Sure, they are not brand new, but I think smokingpipes is always upfront on what the "defects" or user marks are on the pipe.

Look at at the Barber B line pipes on smoke.co.uk
They are really good quality Dunhill seconds. I mean gorgeous.
They look like really nice pipes. I have some Parker pipes which I thought were dunhill seconds. Unfortunately the mortise in these pipes are longer than the tenon, creating an extra space, causing moisture and bad flavours. I wonder if these are the same?

I have some 26 of those Barber pipes and the fit seems perfect, only drawback being on the bent pipes the stem hole does not align with the draught hole, so will not pass a pipe cleaner, all the same they smoke perfectly well. Just means they need taking apart to clean.
They are Dunhill after all and you can't get better than that IMO

@Gregg1980

20 people are going to give you 20 different answers.

Read what you see, and look around to see all the various pipes others smoke, then go online looking them up, reading and researching on the pipes, all this I’m assuming because you are interested.

In the end, if you are wanting to be an Enthusiast/Hobbyist, it’s best to make up your own mind on the subject.

Typically with all the big names out there you can’t really go wrong, it’s just that once in a while, an exceptional piece comes along at a really great price, that makes it the one to go for.

Otherwise, a lot of the pipes out there in the same price ranges, tend to be at the same level of quality.

You have to realize, there are always going to be those that favor particular brands, for various reasons.

The man here is talking 150 Quid, for these prices, you can go out there and get a Commissioned Pipe from an individual carver, custom made, that will typically be better than a big name factory brand.

I have been seriously knocking myself out reading about pipes out there for the past two years, that I can tell you, for the money, Walt Cannoy, his ‘Cardinal House’ pipes, which are custom one of a kind pieces, which he makes at lower prices, can be had for 150 Quid.

I just bought a pipe from Walt Cannoy for 150 Quid, that would normally cost 2-3 times more from another carver, the workmanship is amazing for the money.

There is also Jason Everett highly regarded, that @Chasing Embers has several pipes from.

@Gregg1980 I forgot to mention, FedEX Express International Shipping for a pipe is only 15-20 Euro. I have had several pipes shipped from Italy to the USA.

Don’t be afraid to by a custom commissioned pipe, or a pipe pre made by someone like Walt Cannoy.

There are also great carvers in Europe too.

But for my 2 cents worth, no one complains about the Italians, except a little grumbling at times over Castello.

Radice pipes at 150 quid will be great pipes!

So for a big/bigger name in Pipes, my money is on Radice!

Here’s my Radice Rind too, yes of course I smoke a Radice! ;)

I'd shop for a while, and after looking at a few hundred pipes, i'd focus in on three or four and then winnow it down to one. Or at least, that's the way I go at it. I culled pipes and sent four to SP and got store credit, but even without the store credit, I was shopping in your price range. I finally got it down to a Nording Valhalla straight brandy with military mount, finally ruled out for apparent bubbles in the carved briar finish; a Peterson bent apple, a previous year's Christmas pipe but with year-round looks and a nifty copper band; and a Ropp straight Dublin vintage stummel with a horn stem. But the winner was a Savinelli bent billiard with a cob-pattern carved bowl, called a Pannoccia, a 606 KS, with a large chamber on a fairly light weight pipe, and a yellow stem with a slender green band in the corn cob motif. I thrashed this around for about two weeks before finally deciding, but I am happy with my choice. Price-wise, the MSRP was given as $200, marked down to $120, with a substantial store credit to bring down the price very low. You have to follow your heart and see where it leads. I'm smoking my new pipe now and feel it was the best choice for me.

Lots of great suggestions here. If you like keeping your funds in the UK, you must check out Blakemar Briars in Litchborough, Towcester. Mike Billington is a great pipe maker and a nice guy. His pipes are excellent and very reasonably priced. I have a Sir Douglas pipe from him. It was a bespoke pipe made for Sir Douglas Bader, the legless Spitfire pilot during WW2. Enjoy!

BTW, Gareth, I checked out your photography site. Very nice stuff!
I did a good deal of film photography in my youth and got very comfortable with film cameras. Currently I struggle with learning how to convert to digital. Nothing comes easy in this format even though my Fuji x10 allows for manual shooting.
Enjoy your time here and take advantage of the enormous body of info that members are more than willing to share.
Post your photo work here!

First pipe I ever bought, I like but, there’s things about it I was disappointed about. I suggest maybe hitting up a local B&M and touching feeling the pipe, it might workout better then the internet. I will always keep my first pipe and smoke it, just thought I’d share my experience.

Well i'm completely sold on pipe smoking. It's my birthday coming up the end of March so I'm going to gift myself a new pipe i think. I've been looking at all the brands and the choice is vast. I want to spend 100-150 quid and will probably get a straight pipe. Are there any brands that I should be moving towards? I appreciate this is somewhat of an expansive topic but none the less I would appreciate opinions. Thanks in advance!
Good brand suggestions have been given already. I know you said you were looking forward to a NEW pipe and that’s really a great thing to do but you might also consider estate pipes. Often you can get a real bargain that way and maybe wind up with a pipe that would have been above your price range new. Glad you’re enjoying the pipe. Be sure to post up a pic of whatever you end up getting.

I second that suggestion. Agree with all those comments about Mike.

If you want a bit more international selection, LePipe.it has a large selection of artisanal pipes in your price range.
