Here is a look inside the mortise of my Savinelli bent bulldog (623 Straight Grain). Sorry, I used a laser pointer to illuminate it but you get the idea. A bent factory pipe.474

I haven't smoked it yet and I'm leaning more towards returning it. It cost me around 100$, so just giving it a trial smoke and voiding my return right is out of the question for me. Moreover, for like 30$ extra I can buy a Savinelli which has proper quality control. I've just checked all my pipes and none have the draft hole drilled that high and unprecise.

Thanks everyone for the input!

Pretty soon the "Sav can do no wrong" thugs are going to jump in. Oh, wait, I'm ONE of those! Sorry! :)

And believe me, Mike knoooowwwws about Peterson drilling! }:)

Oh yes I do, but only because I was looking at a gift horse in the mouth. My other Petersons have been great, but I never got them new.

As for the OP's dilemma, if you aren't 100% satisfied with a new pipe for any reason, return it. The pipe may smoke fine, but if it interferes with your enjoyment of it, why put up with that?

In spite of my skepticism of the quality of modern Peterson pipes I thank Thesillyoldbear and Swilford for taking the time to address the community about the issue.

Interesting read and I too am thankful for Sykes’ and Adam’s replies. Talk about quick tackling of issues! Who is the guy on the job that has to scan for and report things like this haha? I imagine him to look something like this:

Thank you everyone for your responses, it seems my thread has hit a sensitive spot with some people. Do not get me wrong, I am not trying to drag Peterson through the mud and I am grateful for the responses of their representatives.

While I do not agree with the production and quality of the received product, regardless of on whose watch it was made, I appreciate the honesty and efforts made to get to the bottom of this. The customer service response by e-mail is another chapter, for me - and this is a very subjective and personal opinion - it was simply not professional enough considering a customer actually takes the time and gives feedback when he could have just returned the pipe to the seller for a refund.

Nevertheless, I will be returning the pipe - I'm just not 100% satisfied with it and for the money spent the flaws are not acceptable to me.

@olkofri : it's a non-filtered pipe.

+1

I will also add that I have zero issue with my 2018 Pete Christmas pipe, which is a straight pipe. It's a great pipe, and one of my favorites, and every bit as nice as its similarly priced competitors. I just object to their drilling on bent pipes.

I wonder if Peterson is using the same machinery/methods for drilling bents that they use for their System pipes. Based on the article linked to last week System pipes require a hole going at a higher angle than what is 'normal'. ?

Nope. The hole is at the top as depicted in the OPs comments LOL! :) . It smokes well though so there's that....

I have an unsmoked (as yet) Castello Bent Dublin (G) size that I will take a look at when I get home and see if it has the same issue. I will return and report!

As an aside, am sorry to hear that Kinsales aren't being made. They have been my favorite Peterson line due to the opportunity to own a SH's bowl @ half the price. Have 4 of them and am quite pleased with them.

Not to beat a dead horse but, one of the 4 Pete's I've owned was a straight non-system pipe (106 Spigot). It, too, had the cupped area directly in the middle of the shank where the sump would be on a system. The draft-hole was above that cupped area exactly as on the bents.

I would that someone with a lot more Pete's than my world has seen would start pulling stems. Are all Pete's (straight or no, system or no) drilled the same way shank-wise?

My 2 cents: According to Pipedia Kinsale pipes are 'A Peterson sub-brand / second.' If that is not a mistake the drilling could correctly be too high. I must be misunderstanding Pipedia.

For me my favorite Petes have been older versions (think 50's and 60's) my newest one ( a Derry b60) will not pass a cleaner and not one of my faves. However, I do still love my Peterson's, if for nothing else, their history!

I would also like to note that Smoking Pipes is my number one go to do to the fact that Sykes et. al, are true pipers who care about the craft in ways I wish all businesses did and why I buy 99% of my stuff from them.
