Ya FVF is the only straight Virginia, that I’ve smoked at least, that I recommend drying for at least an hr or so. All other Virginia’s I smoke straight from the tin and do not dry at all, to get the most from their nuances. 90% of what I smoke is straight Virginia’s. Good straight Virginia’s to try that shouldn’t bite you are ones like Sutliff Crumble Kake Red Virginia, for the deep/fruity/tangy/vinegary reminiscent of McClelland’s, and for straight Virginia’s with no casings or toppings, that are very good and nuanced, try C&D Opening Night, and GL Pease Union Square. Another great Virginia to start on and I still smoke a ton of in the warmer months, is Sutliff 507c Virginia Slices. After a few months in the jar, it smells and has nuances of bright sweet orange, with a little spice to it. It’s very pleasing and priced very good too.
Spot on @Prunetucky84. The only other Virginia blends that I would add to your list (for someone new to Virginia) are: Rattray’s Old Gowrie, Hal O’ The Wynd and Newminster No.400 Superior Navy Flake. All of these will make the trip to Virginia (bliss) a smooth ride.

Another thing Austin, 2 things that beginning pipe smokers make a huge mistake of and ultimately leads them to stop pipe smoking is, 1.)- thinking you have to smoke the entire bowl without relighting, and 2.)- thinking you’re supposed to have HUGE barrels of smoke bellowing out of your mouth.... both couldn’t be further from the truth. Huge barrels of smoke means your burning the tobacco way too fast and hot, leading to tongue bite, overheating your pipe, and burning the flavor off the tobacco. There should just be little whisps of smoke blowing out of your mouth, paced, blow slightly through the pipe and out of the bowl, then pull slightly back in your mouth, blow out, and set a nice slow pace, especially with Virginia’s!! In the 18 years I’ve been smoking pipes, I’ve learned of you aren’t relighting at least 2 or 3 times, your smoking too fast and hot with Virginia’s.
SLowly ,Very useful, I will try Thanks!
