Welcome from Sag Harbor! If you have any interest in a local pipe club we’ve got a great thing going with The Long Island Pipe Club. In person meetings are usually in South Huntington but we’ve been doing Zoom meetings as well due to COVID. Check us out here:

Welcome aboard from Florida.
1 - Dry your tobacco until it doesn’t clump together when you pinch it.
2 - Don’t go for big clouds of smoke. Sip your pipe slowly and move it around in your mouth often.
3 - Start with a simple aromatic like Lane 1-Q and a simple English like Peter Stokkebye Proper English.
4 - After doing all this and you find that you tongue no long hurts and you can start to taste the tobacco, branch out slowly...if you must.
5 - Enjoy the ride.
Thanks for your advice,
I will try

welcome aboard. And first secret hand shake is sip your pipe second let it dry out before smoking not completely dry but drier then it comes in a tin or pouch (a few exceptions of course). Pipes are a lot like cats that way you treat them right and they're cuddly and gentle you do the wrong thing and ouch.
Someone told me that pipe is like a wife

Welcome from Fresno, California! Like everyone else said, smoke s..l..o..w.... if you like aromatics, choose a high quality one like any from Lane Limited, I prefer RLP-6, and a nice mild English like Sutliff match 20, and wait on the Virginia’s until you master a slow, patient smoking cadence.
Agree!
I think I pickup the wrong tobacco, I started with FVF:cry:

I’m one of the rare few that doesn’t get the religious following of FVF... I just don’t get it.... it’s not bad, but I think there are so much more “run of the mill” straight Virginia’s, that are way better! Haha

I don't know much about FVF
just feel that is hard to light and so wet
I tried Ashton Artisan's Blend today and I feel pretty good!

Ya FVF is the only straight Virginia, that I’ve smoked at least, that I recommend drying for at least an hr or so. All other Virginia’s I smoke straight from the tin and do not dry at all, to get the most from their nuances. 90% of what I smoke is straight Virginia’s. Good straight Virginia’s to try that shouldn’t bite you are ones like Sutliff Crumble Kake Red Virginia, for the deep/fruity/tangy/vinegary reminiscent of McClelland’s, and for straight Virginia’s with no casings or toppings, that are very good and nuanced, try C&D Opening Night, and GL Pease Union Square. Another great Virginia to start on and I still smoke a ton of in the warmer months, is Sutliff 507c Virginia Slices. After a few months in the jar, it smells and has nuances of bright sweet orange, with a little spice to it. It’s very pleasing and priced very good too.

Thank you so much! I have written it in my notebook already ;)
I will try these three types of Virginia
Most of the advice I got before was “ Esoterica, Balkan Sobranie, FVF, Germain ,Dunhill " and
I only find some FVF :ROFLMAO:

Sadly Dunhill tobacco is gone but the Scandinavian Tobacco Group, or STG, that made them in the later years, reintroduced a lot of their blends under the Peterson tobaccos. The ones they brought back are the exact same blends, just under the name Peterson now, and good luck with Esoterica’s and Germain’s! Some of the finest tobaccos ever made, especially English/balkans. Some great balkans that are readily available are, McConnell’s Oriental, Aarango Balkan Supreme, and crumble cakes that will make you drool are, Seattle Pipe Club’s Plum Pudding, and Bengal Slices.

New pipe smoker
Just smoked my 3rd bowl yesterday, Tongue hurts
But I am very interested in pipes ,I have bought three kinds of pipes (Briar\ Meerschaum\ corn)
Keep watching the YouTube Now :):):)
Another thing Austin, 2 things that beginning pipe smokers make a huge mistake of and ultimately leads them to stop pipe smoking is, 1.)- thinking you have to smoke the entire bowl without relighting, and 2.)- thinking you’re supposed to have HUGE barrels of smoke bellowing out of your mouth.... both couldn’t be further from the truth. Huge barrels of smoke means your burning the tobacco way too fast and hot, leading to tongue bite, overheating your pipe, and burning the flavor off the tobacco. There should just be little whisps of smoke blowing out of your mouth, paced, blow slightly through the pipe and out of the bowl, then pull slightly back in your mouth, blow out, and set a nice slow pace, especially with Virginia’s!! In the 18 years I’ve been smoking pipes, I’ve learned of you aren’t relighting at least 2 or 3 times, your smoking too fast and hot with Virginia’s.
