Greetings and welcome! Slow down your puffing and try to take small sips, that will help your smoke stay cool and keep your pipe from tasting too ashy. :)

Welcome from Westchester, NY. Nice looking Tuna there, and a couple of Mahi, a good days fishing!

Welcome aboard from Florida.
1 - Dry your tobacco until it doesn’t clump together when you pinch it.
2 - Don’t go for big clouds of smoke. Sip your pipe slowly and move it around in your mouth often.
3 - Start with a simple aromatic like Lane 1-Q and a simple English like Peter Stokkebye Proper English.
4 - After doing all this and you find that you tongue no long hurts and you can start to taste the tobacco, branch out slowly...if you must.
5 - Enjoy the ride.

Greetings from the Cayman Islands.

I second the above tips. Slower cadence not only lowers tongue bite but boosts flavor. When in doubt, I try to sip once every 10 seconds and that seems to keep most blends cool. Having just had my first bowl of 1-Q yesterday I can say that it is a simple smoke with a lot of flavor. Enjoy the ride :col:

Welcome to the forum! Tobacco should smoulder, on the verge of going out. Hot tobacco is flavorless and the moisture created by overzealous puffing becomes steam and the steam can burn your tongue and roof of your mouth. Enjoy the forum!

Welcome from Sag Harbor! If you have any interest in a local pipe club we’ve got a great thing going with The Long Island Pipe Club. In person meetings are usually in South Huntington but we’ve been doing Zoom meetings as well due to COVID. Check us out here:

welcome aboard. And first secret hand shake is sip your pipe second let it dry out before smoking not completely dry but drier then it comes in a tin or pouch (a few exceptions of course). Pipes are a lot like cats that way you treat them right and they're cuddly and gentle you do the wrong thing and ouch.

Welcome from Fresno, California! Like everyone else said, smoke s..l..o..w.... if you like aromatics, choose a high quality one like any from Lane Limited, I prefer RLP-6, and a nice mild English like Sutliff match 20, and wait on the Virginia’s until you master a slow, patient smoking cadence.
