I agree that when compared to cigars, pipe tobacco is different, but not all tobacco is like Manil’s either.

Even as dry as Manil’s Tobacco is, there is still a level of humidity needed.

Go to Google as an example and type in;

‘what is the best humidity for pipe tobacco’

Now you should see the results on an article by SPC; ‘Proper Pipe Tobacco Humidification’.


Humidity at various levels does exist in Pipe Tobacco, what the individual pipe smoker wants to do with this, is a personal choice.

All Tobaccos need a certain level of humidity, it’s just a normal function of life.

There are only a few places in the world like Iran, various deserts, and the Artic, to name but a few, where humidity is only a few percentages, as in 0.5% - 1.0%. Tobacco isn’t grown in these regions, Tobacco is grown with and needs humidity.

What the individual wants to do with their tobacco after it’s grown is up to them.

Humidity simply explained is moisture, and all things in life need moisture to one extent or another.

While I am akin to analyzing things, I do not do so with my tobaccos, nor do I the see the need. It's a simple pleasure, and always brings pleasure to me in it's simplest forms.

Traditionally in Belgium, Semois tobaccos are smoked in pipes with large tobacco chambers. To continue this tradition, we will soon offer a pipe, the "Pot à Semois", declined in two models, a straight and a bent one, in different finishes (smooth, sandblasted, rustic), different colors, and different mouthpieces materials (ebonite, cumberland, acrylic and horn), with or whitout filters.

I don’t understand your reply over ‘Analyzing’.

I’m also not analyzing tobacco or anything for that matter.

And on the Note of Simplicity, I take everything in life in Simplicity.

I’m merely pointing out that humidity to some level is needed for tobacco, maybe the information I shared with you confused you, it was only a little educational is all, nothing I would think takes away the Simplicity, because as a I pointed out, it’s only about Moisture.

I think you read to much into it, sorry for any confusion.

Yes perhaps I did read too much into your post. I saw consulting info on humidity as analyzing, which technically it is, but not in the sense I meant to convey. By simplicity, I meant I smoke it as it comes. Your comments and all others here are welcome and valued, I did not intend for my response to strike any particular tone (though it happens unintentionally in textual exchanges such as these). I skipped this one for now, as I've found his finer cuts to give me more of the flavor I look for. Reserve du Patron is my choice of semois. It burns perfectly, packs easy, and comes alive in any pipe.

I had La Brumeuse in the past, it burned very fast like fire kindling, it even sizzled at times as if saltpeter was added to it. The flavor is very terroir, rustic, peat like with floral notes.

Reserve du Patron is very musty and floral and has a more manageable burn.

I'll be trying la Volute and Le Petit Robin later.

I think it is the floral flavor I don't care for. Not Lakeland but not agreeable to me. To my taste buds, it is the dominant flavor.
There's plenty of European brown tobacco what is called Brun that are more neutral and close to our North American Kentucky like Italian Comune and Forte, Austrian Land tabak and French Bergerac, Caporal Export and St. Claude. All of them are very cheap in their countries and surprisingly good.

Love the Semois pots! I already bought my Christmas pipe, but will keep an eye out for them in the future. Of course, I do not have enough pipes to dedicate one solely to Semois, so perhaps it would be a burley pot for me.

I think I prefer the finer cuts of the Semois, though the flavor is still quite good, IMO. Doesn't taste much differently to my memories of La Brumeuse..

It does seem to have a touch of that, though not a Lakeland. I attributed that to the semois leaf itself. It's definitely different from 'regular' burleys. I find myself getting bitterness, but if I smoke it just right it's one of a kind.

I just got mine, and I think I do indeed prefere it in a finer cut myself. That said, I've only had one of the new rough cut, so I haven't given it a chance yet.
