Fellow pipe smokers,

I’m in Pennsylvania, about two hours east of Boswell’s original location. I’ve been smoking a pipe for a little over a year. I received my first pipe as a gift 7 or 8 years ago but I couldn’t get the hang of it so I gave up and went back to cigars. A year or so ago I found out a co-worker was a pipe smoker, so we got to talking which inspired me to pick up the pipe again and take the time to learn.

This forum has been great for reading about various techniques and tips to try out to start dialing in what works for me. I definitely wouldn’t say I got it yet, but it’s been a fun journey that I look forward to continuing.

I’ve found I really enjoy English blends, especially those that are heavy on the Latakia. I’ve also been trying out a few different VaPers which I like as well.

I appreciate everything you all do to pass on your knowledge for us new pipe smokers!

Welcome Andrew, from Fresno, California! When I first started smoking a pipe 18 years ago, I did the typical thing of horrible tobacconist aromatics, then moved to and fell in love with heavy English blends a year or so later, and then about 6-7 years ago, I got into Virginia’s, slowed my smoking pace, and have never looked back! I still enjoy a English/Balkan in the winter and a quality aromatic like RLP-6 in the winter as well.

Welcome from central N.C. From my perspective, you are onto some good blends. I'm also fond -- to put it mildly -- of burley blends.

you'd think with all the people from PA here I'd see pipe smokers more often then I do. Though I keep smelling aromatic pipe tobacco in my neighborhood.

Welcome from the Cayman Islands! I recently received Boswell's Chocolate Cream and Bear Blend, and enjoy them both. Now I am looking forward to the arrival of my first Boswell pipe. Cheers!

G'day and welcome from Australia.

Having a pipe smoking mentor would have made a huge difference when I first started on a pipe.
I switched to get off a 30-40 a day cigarette habit so I persevered with my inept technique.

Finding pipe forums helped me immensely. No one laughed at my dumb questions.
It's a fine community for sure.

My first experience with Latakia was not good [a generous sample of Becks ol' Limey Bastard from 4noggins]
The bag note reminded me of "Burnt rubber, asphalt and butt"

Thinking, 'do people smoke this shit?' of course I had to try it.
It was intriguing for sure but way too rich. Once I mixed it 50/50 with Windsail Virginia, I enjoyed a small bowl every evening. One bowl was nice. Two bowls was one too many.

It was an acquired taste for sure though I don't think I'll ever get the taste for Lat-bombs.
Blends like Count Pulaski and Early Morning Pipe Match are more my speed.
