@Walt Cannoy

It allows time for details like polishing the tobacco chamber to 1200 grit...

Walt, I think I'll just make up a super secret bowl coating from camel dung and bat urine and forget sanding the bowl altogether. It will taste like crap and no one will ever smoke more than 1 bowl in it, but I'll never have a problem with anyone burning it out....:)
You need to plan a road trip and come down to Sarasota for some ribs!

That being said … IF you find pleasure in your cobs or any other pipe YOU chose, then enjoy it. But stop with the cobs smokes as well as the $50.00, $100.00, $200.00 pipes. Don’t ROTFLYAO because others find they enjoy a $200.00 pipe. You should be just as happy that THEY have found pleasure in their pursuits as they do for you! You don’t see anyone that buys hand made pipes speak down at those that enjoy cobs. So show a little grace and respect.

I really love this thread.

I am a pretty new pipe smoker and have a decent collection of factory, estate and cobs ranging from $5 to $200.

While this is only my two cents worth (and we all know what 2 cents will buy you) of opinion.

I see how someone can be happy with whatever level they are comfortable with, but for me as I get further into this hobby I find I would like to know what the next level is all about.

I don't see me as ever smoking a $5000 sculpture, but a handmade pipe in a more classic shape is definetly is in my future.

I am so glad to see that pipe makers are adding their opinions here and discussing the process and costs that are involved.

The main point here is that we should all support each other, no matter what we enjoy smoking our tobacco from, whether lava rock, an apple, a used tire, a briar or cob. No one should judge or look down on anyone for what they smoke or what they smoke it out of, just be happy that they are happy with their choice of blend and smoking instrument.
I am going to get back to finishing my bowl of camel shit in my new hand made pipe made from a sabre-toothed tiger's canine tooth. It's the new briar, and is the cat's meow....pun intended.

rsuninv, is your crack pipe hand made? How does it smoke for you? Is it shatterproof glass? I am in the market for a new one and am curious. I will have the funds available after my next two breaking and enterings and a mugging.
I like your style btw, well said...you get what you pay for.

At 45 years old I have tried just about everything at least once. My analogy about the fly rods holds true for me with Pipes. I have tried, and even purchased expensive pipes (amd fly rods) over the years, but looking back on it all, I have never found them to offer a substantially better Pipe Smoking Experience to the point that I would consider it worth the extra dollars spent......that is when compared to spending $9 on a Corn Cob General :)
When I see someone selling a Briar Pipe, for thousands of dollars, I can't help but chuckle.
I will agree that there are variations in the pipe smoking experience when you smoke the same tobacco in a Cob, vs. Briar, vs. Meerschaum vs. a Gourd vs Porcelain etc...etc...etc......but I feel when you start exceeding a couple hundred bucks on a Pipe made from a block of Briar Wood, you are beginning to pay for something other than the quality of the smoking experience.....perhaps the myth or legend of the builder ?
A pipe is a simple tool. After a point, you just can't enhance it. Subtle difference, perhaps, but how is one Briar that sells for $3,000 really that much better than one selling for $300 ?

That should really have been a new thread, but from what I understand, Brian sells his pipes mainly on eBay.
If you can find his store on eBay, maybe you can send him a message there asking about a commission.

Just do a search on ebay for doran pipes - they will come up if he has any available. He usually posts them every weekend - new batches of 5 or 6 pipes or so. Been looking to get one myself in the near future.

My advice,
Invest in good estate pipes from good vendors like smokingpipes.com and similar businesses. I got my fiancee an awesome Savinelli which costs around $200 and above for less than $50. Just got her an Aldo Morelli for $40 check out the threads for the same.
Rick Black is an awesome carver, he just made me a nice awesome pipe, will post pictures and video once it arrives next month. I seriouly think Rick deserves more than he charges.
Cheers,

Chris
