Back here to update you! I just decided to clean the mortise of the 106 Billard ( pre carbonized bowl ) with a Q-tip and some alcohol 70%, the highest grade available here.

The Cotton came out all red and stained with something disgusting! What’s that??

Here it is, and do you think I should do the same inside the bowl??

Scrub with alcohol and maybe let it sit there with a cotton ball for a few hours?

Even my hand got stained. I would never imagined that coming out of a savinelli.

is this normal?

That is stain.
This is why I recommend swabbing out brand new pipes with Q-tips and alcohol.
No worries about the bowl... you found your trouble spot.
Don’t you think this stain is also inside the bowl but covered by the pre carbonization?

And what about the other 3 pipes?

I don’t see any stain inside the mortise, but it is possible that it could be there but not visible to the eye?

Maybe do that on all 4 pipes?

Thank you!

Yes, try it on all your pipes.
Also use a wet pipe cleaner to check if there is any beyond the mortise.

Thank you. I just did that on all pipes and decided to scrub the bowl of the 106 with alcohol. All that pre carbonized stuff came right off.

I’ll see if this helps before trying on the other bowls.

what I find weird is that only the 106 and 105 stained the Q-tip with that red stuff, the 321s didn’t.

But somehow all of them are irritating my mouth the same way. Maybe some other invisible treatment to the wood?

We’ll see...

I’m quite disappointed at this.

I have inexpensive non briar pipes that barely pass a pipe cleaner and they smoke perfectly.
I'm really only kidding at this, but they are entry level cheap pipes.. slightly overpriced for the quality received.

Whenever I buy a new pipe I do a thorough alcohol cleaning of it: chamber, mortise, and bit. I do it for disinfecting purposes, but it helps removing tons of the coating and the staining as collateral.

Basically, I swab with a paper towel or pipe cleaner or Q-tip all the interior surfaces repeatedly till the cleaning device comes out white (or mostly white). The amount of swabbing with alcohol (gin) I have to do varies with pipes. Some take only a couple or 3-4 passes, others are so bad that I must do like 10 passes or more. A Nording Compass I purchased was the worst offender:

Dip staining seems to be the issue. If the manufacturer used that process, you'll have to swab the mortise prior to smoking. I had to do that with my Brigham Chinook. It only took a few passes on that one, though.

As for Savinelli being junk, well, I've never owned one and this thread is giving me second thoughts about buying that Qandale, but the issue is not limited to Savinelli. This is certain to trigger Brobs, but Peterson was one of the worst offenders in terms of pipes tasting like crap due to their dip staining. Maybe they've solved that issue now with their new ownership; again, I don't own a Peterson, but read the horror stories here.

I guess that’s true. ?

To be fair Savinelli offers a wide range of pipes some of which are fantastic at reasonable prices. I tend to go for mid-grades with most companies but there are some fantastic values on the lower end that are often dismissed. Many people will sand out bowl coatings and make sure the shanks and stems are clear of stain and wax

I think many factory pipes have similar issues in their lower range Savinelli makes some great pipes but I tend to steer clear of the lowest ranges from most factories. I wouldn’t hesitate on a quandale. My Savs are great smokers and just ask @chasingembers how he feels about Savs.

That's good to know.

Yes, I agree and it's not surprising. I told my local tobacconist about the Peterson horror stories and he said that if I wanted a trouble-free Pete I had to go with the upper tiers, over the $120 range.

I don’t have vast experience but most of my pipes tend to be about $100 plus. I think the systems are fantastic and the system deluxe are probably one of the best values around. I have some Petes in the $75-$100 range which are fine it’s just not my usual market. I just tend to avoid the lowest ranges. Not from experience but more from snobbery. Lol.

No they were and can be. It seems there was a very bad period from the early 2000s to around 2017 even into 2018 where they let out some real stinkers.

Their higher grades are just as good as other higher grade pipes. I agree. But their basic pipes are just as basic sometimes more so than competitors.

For me, the price difference between the semi basic pipes and the decently good pipes is so small that I don’t know why to choose the lower grade. And this is what I mean when I say the lower grade pipes are overpriced. It’s not a big enough difference to warrant the difference in quality received.
