Well the box is on its way this morning to Rick aka “mthanded”, and he should have it Monday. I should have looked closer at the list and seen he is here in state, and not too awfully far drive away. We could have maybe met half way for lunch and did the exchange. Dang it, maybe next time. I was able to try some of aromatics I have wanted to try from Sutliff, as there were many to select from in the box. I’m pretty much a non-aro guy, and will likely remain so (they all seem to cause a film/coating in my mouth), but it was good to try some of the blends I’ve been curious about.
I felt that the English, Virginia and Virginia Flakes were under represented in the box pass so I added some of my favorites. I also pasted the description of the blends below from the descriptions shown on the Pipes&Cigars website.
Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Bulk Best Brown #2 Flake – “Medium strength flake tobacco. Blended from the finest Virginias and Burleys.”
Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Bulk Bright CR Flake – “This flake is pure, unadulterated Virginias, bright Carolina Virginias”
Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Bulk Bobs Flake Chocolate – “The main characteristics of this flake come from the 8% Latakia included in the blend and the smooth chocolate aroma. Brazilian, Zimbabwe and Malawi Virginia leaf make up 82% of the blend providing a mild/medium smoke cooled with the addition of 8% Malawi sun cured and 2% Malawi Burley. The Latakia cools but also adds strength and aroma. The cocoa casings and chocolate top flavors are rounded off with vanilla and other flavors providing sweet notes in this very unique and popular blend.
Hearth & Home Marquee Black House - “The winning blend from the Chicagoland Pipe Show 2011. We're proud to introduce Black House. This blend is a tribute to a great tobacco of the past. Made for the 2011 contest it was judged to be the closest overall to the dark balkan-type mixture it was designed to emulate. For you Virginia Heads it's loaded along with Kentucky, Balkans, Turkish, and even a smattering of Black Cav
Home & Hearth Louisiana Red – “A great sweet and spicy blend containing two different Red Virginias and a good amount of outstanding St. James Perique. The rich, round sweetness of the Virginias are complimented by the plum and pepper hints of the cool-burning Perique. An overwhelming favorite of our local pipe club members”
Seattle Pipe Club Mississippi River Bulk - “Rich Virginias Pressed Tobacco Spiced with Oriental leaf Latakia, and Perique The source of Mississippi River™ ! The way Joe tells it, it all came to him in a dream. Joe blended for 25 years before coming up with this, his first blend. Everything before was...unsmokable, says Joe. So one night, Joe wakes up from a sound sleep, grabs a pencil by the bedside and scribbles a recipe from his dream. He even dreams tobacco! Morning comes and he uses the notes to create a Virginia blend like no other. Mississippi River is born. The rest is history in a tin. Ask Joe if you don’t believe me. Members beg for this blend. It’s a little embarrassing. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.”
GLPease Haddos Delight – “Haddo's Delight is a stout blend of several Virginia tobaccos with a generous measure of long-cut perique. Unflavored Green River black Cavendish and a little air-cured white burley ribbon provide fullness, body, and a bit of extra strength. Finally, an exclusive process darkens and marries the mixture. The flavor is full on the palate, earthy, slightly sweet and intriguingly piquant, with overtones of figs and raisins. A wonderful blend for the perique lover.”
Hope those on down the line enjoy my additions. Thanks for allowing me the privilege of being a part of this.
