I've only owned 3 Peterson's. They were some of the first pipes I bought. The first one was a straight billiard and it had a good sized gap between the mortise and the tenon. The pipe gurgled all the time. I thought... ah, just bad luck and bought another. It was also a billiard, but had a lacquer like finish that bubbled up in three or four spots on the first smoke. Again, I thought... ah, just some bad luck and eventually bought a bent brandy shaped Donegal that was drilled way off and again, a nice sized gap between the mortise and the tenon. It was not a system pipe. I gave up on Peterson's at that point. Bashing? I'm not a basher. This was my experience. Peterson's made a chunk of change off a novice pipe smoker with the new pipe smoker chalking it up to bad luck, while really all along it was a pipe company making and selling pipes at an affordable price attractive to a new pipe smoker that were so poorly engineered that having an enjoyable smoke with one of them was next to impossible, while the pipe smoker was sitting and thinking that it's something he must being doing wrong half the time and considers the thought that maybe pipe smoking isn't for him... a number of years later the pipe smoker is prompted to share his experience with Peterson pipes. Peterson's taught me a lot early on really quickly, and for that I'm forever grateful.

Yeah, mothernature, the issue I think Peterson most fails at is their lacquered pipes. Too many of them tend to have their finishes bubble. So, I definitely advise steering clear of those finishes.

I have about a dozen of them and like them all.
I like my Systems the most, and I'm still in awe of how well my modest standard 31 performs. I love the roomy Sherlocks (yes, even the Original, infamous for its bowl getting warmer than it should, as it hugs my beloved Westminster with passion and produces that exquisite smoke, surprisingly cool). I really like my quirky ones - a B11 Fermoy most people wouldn't find attractive, a Harp 408 that wants to be an author but is more of a blogger, my meer-lined that lets me experiment new blends with no ghosting, and my more expensive Deluxes that just look great and perform their job with stoic precision. Even my modest ones, a Killarney that is dedicated to Dunhill Flake, and a Green St Patrick's that only sees Uni and Irish flakes, are very well regarded. And yes, cleaning systems and Sherlocks takes an extra step. I don't mind.
I know I'm a Pete fan. I can tell because when people say it's a bad brand with quality issues I can't ignore the comment. And I'm partial I'm sure. Maybe it's the memories of having picked each one over the years, or For how easy it is to start a Pete-centric conversation with a stranger at the pipe club. Maybe I'm wrong. But if they truly have quality issues, I've dodged them all and have the Luck o' the Irish on my side, as all my Petes were brand new when bought.
Lucky me.

If 100% of their pipes were garbage no one would buy them. If 100% were perfect, people that bought them would not complain.

OK since I'm usually one of the first to post my negative Peterson experiences, I'll post a few of my favorites.

Is that Irishmade Army a 120 @leacha? I just got a 120 army mount last week and can hardly put it down. That's my fourth Peterson and with the exception of an ebony Killarney B11 they all smoke well. The B11 was an estate and it's drilled off-centre and gurgles, plus it had a nasty latakia ghost. My 999 Dracula has a tight stem but I can live with that.

Lecha, nice looking group of Petersons.
I have seven Petersons all of recent manufacture, and I have no issues with any of them. They all have good drilling and none have been dip stained. Now they are all blasts or rusticated pipes so I have not had any finish bubbling problems, but I see how that could occur. I've also bought them all online, but have taken the time to contact the vendor prior to purchase.

r-deluxe system pipes are some fine pipes. I own 4 of them. They're reputed to be 1 of the higher grade lines essentially guaranteed to be fill-free.

In spite of the few minor problems that I've had with Peterson's in the past, I still find myself drawn to them when PAD hits me. I love the way they feel in my hand and the way the chunky stems look inline with the rest of the pipe. I am always more partial to the sandblasts and rustications for some reason. All of that being said, I am now considering ordering a new Pete bulldog or canadian, I love both shapes.

r, don't have a deluxe Darwin but do have a smooth Darwin standard system. Think it's 1 of their finest shapes. As to the deluxe system pipes, heard that, as they use only flawless briar for them, such briar is getting harder to source and thus their scarcity. Don't own a spigot but would love to have 1. I think they've become the best spigot maker out there. All in all, they're my favorite maker because they have so many great shapes that appeal to me. Beefy shanks and unique bowl shapes do it for me far more than any other "British style" makers around now.

The spigot in question is beefy all around. I will post a picture when I get a round tuit.
Speaking of puns on words, I unfortunately read your handle as "Iris hurl", picturing a bloke who had too many pints, then ate some flowers, with the expected result. Glad on re-reading it's something along the lines of an Irishman named Earl.... :)

Thanks for the welcome jpmcwjr. Speaking of Pete spigots, just discovered they have a new spigot line available @ SP, Roundstone. Nice dark brown blasted bowls with caramel stems. Don't do pints but it is time for the vino now. :D

I've always wanted a Peterson, but I've never been too big on the shapes/look for the most part. The ones that have caught my eye are always out of my price range for an unknown. If I ever see an estate bargain which catches my fancy, I'll snatch it up in a heartbeat

I'll be looking at "Roundstones" when next I visit Peterson. Roundstone is a gem of a small town in Co. Galway, Atlantic storms, great beaches, good food, kinda artsy but grand. My favorite vacation place on the Island. So, using my fuzzy logic, the pipes must be great. We'll will see.
