Negligence: Is This Repairable?

Hello All.
I didn't listen when I was told not to dismantle a pipe while it's hot. Now I'm left with a leaky pipe. Moisture escapes this (picture below) non-flush joint between the stem and shank, and it gets on my hand sometimes. It's a little gross but doesn't take away from the experience too much. I'm thinking with gentle heat I can reform the acrylic. Whatcha got for me? Thanks

The flushness has not changed but I believe I expanded the diameter of the tenon judging by the increased tightness. No moisture escape to speak of. Pretty neat concept.

Likely swelled the mortise by getting the pipe too hot or wet. Rub some beeswax on the tenon to get it to slide back in.

That gap can also be caused by buildup at the bottom of the mortise.

Cam you post a full view of the pipe? A little hard to discern what is what in the closeup.

In that event it appears to be more a manufacturing defect than operator error.

Ah. The PC warranty does not cover stems, even though I am within 30 days of use. I will avoid Baraccini products going forward, but their Filo Rosso is my favorite briar thus far. I'll be letting all my pipes cool down thoroughly before cleaning...

The Brarasccini line seems to have used a an acrylic mortise that a machine produces to seal up against a moulded stem another machine produces.

It all had to work out before they made the moulds and began production.




Were it mine I’d borrow some nail polish from my wife and get to painting acrylic.

Heating up acrylic with a flame seems unswise.

I understand. Im still a noob with briar,but I won't be cheap on my next pipe purchase. I'd rather have less great pipes than more so-so pipes.

Your pipe has a novel and pretty way to join the shank and stem.

The gap could be caused by a glued in tenon thats been pulled out a little bit. Got a picture of the tenon?

As promised here are the pictures. The neighbor kids are off school and they're playing in the snow right by the road just like my brother and I used to 20 years ago. It's a dark plug kind of day. Cheers to everyone shoveling with me.

The back part of the shank is called a mortise.

Normally it’s just a piece of hollowed out wood.

Yours is quite fancy. Looks like a ring of wood with an acrylic ring. On most all of them (except yours) that all seals up.

I have a few factory pipes with slight gaps, too. Sounds like your pipe isn't leaking anymore. Now that you know how to take better care of your pipes, you can focus on enjoying them!
