Tampers.jpg
Here's my current lineup of tampers (other than those built into my lighters).

From left to right:
* .45-70 rifle shell with walnut knob. (large caliber rifle shells make good tampers)
* One I made out of a piece of cherry wood.
* Piston valve
* Pipe nail
* Store bought
* Antique tamper made of pewter.

I'm a big fan of most of the 8dECO lineup. The one with scoop is used for large bore pipes, the bamboo shanked one for small bores, and the short 45 degree end one stays in my pipe roll.

I'll like the idea of the dunhill gadget for lunting and keeping ash out of my pocket, but not the price.

There were a couple of times in the distant past, where upon getting ready to light the pipe, I discovered that I couldn't find a tamper on my person, and ended up just reaching into a parts bin and grabbing a stove bolt that was two inches or longer. Rarely carried any of those for more than a couple of days.
