All of the presents are under the tree and I just got a tidy little christmas bonus. I put my last performance bonus in to savings so I want to spend this one on a pipe but I haven't been able to find anything I'm exceptionally excited about.
My budget is CAD $200-300 - I've been looking for a sandblasted lovat. Ring grain would be ideal but that may be asking too much for my budget. Preferably on the larger side as I've been smoking largely english blends lately and I find they really unfold nicely in my Savinelli KS (which pipedia equates to a group 3.5-4) and would be interested in seeing what something slightly larger burns like.
If you come across something in your travels I'd love to hear about it! It would be greatly appreciated!
Best,

Dorian

If you could go $25 over budget this one is a beauty, decently large bowl but not sure if it's as big as you are looking for.

Gahhhh that's some amazing grain... you tempt me sir. Though luckily I was looking for something a bit stouter than that elongated silhouette. Commissioning may be an option... I've heard a lot of positive talk about Layton pipes...
I'll take a look at the Ashtons thank you!
Sorry about my picky-ness, I do appreciate the leads!

call Mark Tinsky.. I'm sure you can get exactly what you want and how you want it from Mark and have some change.

Thanks for the ideas guys! The more I think about it the more I like the idea of having something commissioned. It's too cold here to smoke very often anyways and as an added bonus I'll get a couple months of anticipation.
I will look in to the above as well as dochudson's suggestion of Mark Tinsky and keep you posted! If you have any other suggested makers I'm all ears!

The other thing you might think about is getting a less expensive pipe and stocking up on some of your favorite tobacco. I know there are a few pipes I'm wanting but I prefer right now when its cold to buy tins of stuff I smoke a lot and just push it to the back of the tobacco cabinet. Things like big tins of Frog Morton, or McClelland's #27 and just sit on them for 6-8 months. But that's just me. Or you might commission a local cabinet maker to build you a really nice wall mounted or floor standing pipe/tobacco station. A place for the tins and opened pouches, with built in pipe rack.

I second Ryan Alden,

he can make a mean lovat,

and his gallery has several different examples in different styles,

here's a short stubby one that looks great!

This Russ Cook may be up your alley, it's a bargain I think.

I have one of his pipes and it serves me very well.

Or,

you could keep it in the home country and go with Evan Wiseman,

I've been impressed by the look of his stuff and got a commish pipe in the works, in the final stages, he knocked it outta the park, and it was a rather unusual and difficult request on my part - he took up the challenge and delivered the goods!

He's quickly becoming known as a King of Crag, but if you prefer softer blasts he'd be able to do that too...

If you want something stout, I doubt you would do better than a Brian Ruthenberg, especially if you want ring grain. Although his pipes tend to be bigger like what you mentioned, they also tend to be quite light. If you commission something from him it might take a while, but you could just follow him on Facebook too.
There was a Matzhold on SP last night that I was really looking at, met your criteria perfectly, but it is gone this morning.

I forgot about Tinsky, he is DEFINITELY high up there on the list for me. I have 4 of his pipes, including one custom commission poker that was blasted by Michael Lindner, has a masur birch stem insert and came with a custom made tamper with gorgeous grain on it...all within your specs listed. Plus, Mark is second to none on customer service and keeping you updated on the status of your commission. Highly recommended.
A lot of other very good suggestions here as well, including Alden and Crawford. They are both high on my list of American hand made pipes to acquire. Can't go wrong with any of them really. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Talk about spoiled for choice! Thank you all for your suggestions. I will have to do some serious looking around that can't quite be conducted in a tiny window hiding in the corner of my monitor at work (Shhhhh don't tell!).
Thank you all again! I'll keep you posted!

Luckily I found myself a girlfriend who tolerates the pipesmoking and won't let me marry her until she's done her degree in another 3 years. That's not to say I told her about the bonus...
300 isn't exactly high-end... this I know. Maybe someone will let me use it as a down payment.
