Need English Recommendations

I guess I'm looking for a classic, quintisential English/Latakia mixture, but also blends in this catagory that have a twist -- like a topping, or another interesting or unusual varietal, or something like that. Like Bayou Morning, it has burley, or like Sextant with the rum and DFK.

@jiminks , would you have any suggestions for Englishes? I'm not afraid of the Latakia either so it doesn't have to be light on it.

There are a varying iterations of English blends on the market. There is one blend that I find to be a throwback to classic English blends and it is appropriately named, Proper English (PS #52) by Peter Stokkebye, If you can locate a tin of Dunhill London Blend on the secondary market, then you will experience the epitome of the genre,

Do you mean London Mixture? If so, it looks like Davidoff is making it now

You already have my favorite, Quiet Nights.

But I also really love GLP Westminster. Easily an all-day English. Even down here in Florida. Just maybe not in the middle of July.

My other favorite is Ashtons Artisans Blend. This was the blend that got me hooked on the pipe. In the same vein as Nightcap. Really rich and a great end to an evening.

Yes, I had a brain fart. The Davidoff is their own blend. It is not a reproduction. STG did not choose to produce it when they reintroduced former Dunhill blends under the Peterson banner. There is nothing on the market to duplicate it. GLP created Westminster as a “tribute” to London Mixture. It is quite good, yet not identical. There are English blends that I probably prefer to PS #52 but, it is a definitive example.

Which iteration are you referring to? Duke Street? Murray's? Or the STG produced?

I’m taking a break from a grueling day of work, pushing out the second episode of Harley Quinn season 3. Sitting out on the front lawn, enjoying the sunset and smoking some 6 year old Black House. Definitely a fine smoke.

In the interest of full disclosure, I will say that I have tried only a few Englishes, so you're hearing from a relative novice on the subject. Nevertheless, John Bull Royal English gets my vote. $5 or $6 a pouch, and damn tasty. Benefits from a brief dry time, FYI. Balkan Sasieni gets 2nd place, and I'll give the bronze to Wessex Balkan Supreme. Have not cracked my tin of Drew Estate Meat Pie, but seeing as I'm head over heels for all the other blends they put out, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about it.

Blends with a twist? Count Pulaski, Burma Road, Russ' Tastykake. HH Latakia Flake great on its own. Spritzed with spiced rum and left to age (including time on the dash of a hot car in the sun-recommended by the man himself) really sublime. Grab a blend you like, aromatic even, and throw in a bit of blending Latakia.

Their Liga no. 9 is one of my favorites. Wish they weren't so damned expensive.

As far as their pipe tobacco though - I've read they were some of the Lane Limited blends but simply re-named. My favorites were Meatpie and Harvest on Hudson.

I’ll have to give a nod to Stokkebye’s Proper English. It’s the most definitive English blend I’ve come across. It’s also a pretty good smoke.

Funny, a good friend of mine was raving over the phone about their cigars to me not long ago. I have a modest reputation for raving about their pipe tobacco blends on here, a propensity I have managed to keep under control...until now! Production years were only '13 to '17, unfortunately. I've tried three of their eight blends, and I have three others aging in the cellar. They made my favorite VA flake (Gatsby Luxury Flake), and one of my favorite aromatics (Grand Central). Plus, I really dig their tin art. Makes sense to me that their cigars would be the cream of the crop too.

Gonna be some time yet until I get around to trying Meat Pie, but when I do, you can bet that I'll do a formal review of it on here.

You were given a ton of really good choices, and I really don't have any suggestions better than most of the other folks. Here's a short list because there are tons of English blends around.

Lat with a topping: Wilke Lizzie Blood English.

American English: Wilke Gentry Royal Blend, Drucquer and Sons Inns Of Court, Sutliff Match Barking Dog.

English, Balkan: Drucquer and Sons Blairgowrie, Wilke Crystal Palace, H&H Black House, H&H WhiteKnight, Watch City The Church Warden, Watch City Ahab's Comfort, etc., etc., etc.

Pretty much all of the Orlik Dunhill blends are available in the McConnell Heritage series. They are the K&K versions of the recipes. Not sure how they compare to the STG/Peterson’s versions but they have pretty much the complete line, while Pete is limited. That said, I haven’t tried them.

My Dunhill favorites of the early 2000s from blends available in the US were:
Apertif and London Mixture which are McConnell St James Park and Picadilly Circus.

I took this same advice a while back and have not regretted it. I smoke all of the first 3 regularly and bought an additional 1/2 pound of Tastykake immediately upon smoking my first couple of bowls. These are not blends that are overly complex or difficult to wrap your pallet around - the are just good tasting all day smokes IMHO.

**Also - I have started adding cigar leaf to HGL to kick it up a notch (add a bit of spice and additional creaminess). I’m presently pressing some into Kake to try to marry the flavors a bit more.

I have several of the McConnell “clones’. They are all quality tobaccos but, frankly, Sutliff Match blends are much closer.
