So, I've been piping (love that word) for a few years now, and, for the last few months, I've been down a Va/ VaPer hole, with most of my formerly beloved English and Balkan blends gathering age. I tried a couple Burley blends early on in my pipe-smoking journey, including Haunted Bookshop and Old Joe Krantz. I didn't like either one and, unfortunately, ending up tossing them both about a year ago. I smoked a tin of University Flake early on and can't say I loved it at the time. But, I've loved dark fired blends since day one, including ODK and Dark Strong Kentucky. Lately, I find myself smoking at least a bowl of Irish Flake a day. I'm thinking that it might be time to try some Burley/ VaBur flakes, but I have no idea what I should try. Could my love for Irish Flake be a sign that I might enjoy other Burleys. Is there anything similar or in thee same family, so to speak, that I should try? Any guidance is appreciated.
C&D Burley Flake 3 is right up your alley. Five Brothers, and give Pegasus another shot

LOL when I first started pipe smoking, or when I picked it back up after 20+ years, I remember looking at Five Bros and seeing people talking about how it would put you on your a**, never tried it as a result
I suppose it can for some folks. It gets mixed reviews for sure. It comes dry, ready to smoke, burns great and does offer some nicotine. I understand a lot of people don’t like for reasons ranging from too strong, not flavorful enough, etc… but it’s a straight burley with no frills and maybe less casing than anything else. It’s really not that intense, IMO. There is better tobacco, but if going for straight burley - this checks every box. And yes, I happen to enjoy it occasionally. ?

I alway forget about Five Brothers when I am trying to think of burleys. Semois is another in that same vein as 5bros.

WOW!!! Wasn't expecting this many recommendations. Putting together a list now, gonna have to do several orders to try them all. But, I'm gonna start with just 2 or 3 first, to see what I think. I smoked a bowl of Dark Bird's Eye earlier and love it. I'm a huge fan of Jack Knife, although it is DFK rather than straight Burley. I have a couple ozs. of Ennerdale Flake that have been jarred since Feb 2019. I think I've smoked from that jar once or twice, but definitely not in the last year or year and a half. I love Watch CIty #558, have 4 ozs. jarred up and gonna order some more on my next Watch City order.
I think that my first Burley order is gonna be Golden Extra, Burley Flake # 1, Granger is cheap enough to try. When I order from Watch City, I'll grab some Watch City Slices as well

I’m a Virginia fan first and foremost, but these are the burleys I really enjoy:

Mac Baren HH Burley Flake
WCC Watch City Slices
WCC Stubb’s Pipe
Sutliff 702 Burley
GLP Barbary Coast

The latter is one of those blends that defies easy categorization, but it’s burley forward and very tasty.

For the last couple of days, I've been smoking Haunted Bookshop for the first time. I was hesitant, because of a few burley smokers that I respect their opinions had said that they didn't like it. But, maybe it's my love of perique that has me loving the hell out of it. I did expect it to be "mustier" but I find it just musty enough.

Yesterday I found a package of Cater Hall in my Yamaha Rhino that’s been aging 15 years or more.

My, my, how delicious.

Carter Hall is a popular drug store burley blend, but it’s one of the best of it’s kind.

Think of Five Brothers without the nicotine blast, and a little casings and toppings, and that’s close.

Carter Hall and the Original Sir Walter Raleigh are tasty burleys, that you can still buy at the drug store, and neither beat you up smoking them.

Prince Albert and Velvet are two other burley blends, but both are more flavored, I think, than CH and SWR.

Like Perique, Dark Fired Kentucky is made from burley.
It may be, but I remember Jitterbugdude, who is a tobacco farmer, posted a list showing that categorically the leaf is not listed as a burley. But, neither here nor there, because one could also argue that Virginias (bright leafs) are also a burley, as Sykes once pointed out on here.
I think of posting Dark Fired blends in burley requests are sort of like posting latakia when someone requests Orientals. Technically, it is an oriental, but it wasn't exactly what the member was asking for.

And, it also sorta drives me nuts when someone wants burley recommendations, and people post OTC codgers. I mean, yeh, but come on... they are very lightly flavored aromatics. I get that it also has burley in it... but I would think that when someone posts looking for a burley experience, that a straight up burley experience is what they want. Probably the less casing the better, IMO.

Just splitting hairs here, I know, I know. But, for the sake of conversation...

That's a difference of cultivation versus the difference of processing for dark fired and perique.
Jitter's post was in regards to seed stock. I don't have the link anymore, but as I said, the problem is in response to expectations in asking the question. Like asking for a Virginia and someone suggesting PS LTF or C&D Autumn Evening.

But, as I said, just conversation.
