So, I've been piping (love that word) for a few years now, and, for the last few months, I've been down a Va/ VaPer hole, with most of my formerly beloved English and Balkan blends gathering age. I tried a couple Burley blends early on in my pipe-smoking journey, including Haunted Bookshop and Old Joe Krantz. I didn't like either one and, unfortunately, ending up tossing them both about a year ago. I smoked a tin of University Flake early on and can't say I loved it at the time. But, I've loved dark fired blends since day one, including ODK and Dark Strong Kentucky. Lately, I find myself smoking at least a bowl of Irish Flake a day. I'm thinking that it might be time to try some Burley/ VaBur flakes, but I have no idea what I should try. Could my love for Irish Flake be a sign that I might enjoy other Burleys. Is there anything similar or in thee same family, so to speak, that I should try? Any guidance is appreciated.

@cosmicfolklore and @ray47 I was looking at Pegasus and have a tin of Burley Flake # 1 in my SP cart right now. I've been going back and forth on MacB Burley Flake. How is Golden Extra? I don't know whether I'd like pure Burley or not, kinda reticent considering my experiences w/ OJK and Haunted Bookshop. But, I'm definitely willing to try.

Golden Extra and Cube Cut has a just enough Virginia to give it a little natural sweetness. Cube Cut has a slight flavor to the casing, but very slight.

Burley Flake is worth trying, very subtle, not a heavy hitter. But good.

These I like for a beainless smoke. Just smoke while working or reading or driving kind of smokes.

I can’t blame you with Haunted Bookshop. I try to enjoy it but I don’t get much from HB. However, Pegasus has become a real favorite for me. I have some C&D Burley Flake on its way. Research descriptions of BF #1thru 5 to see which suits you. I’m not a fan of Perique or Latakia so Burley Flake #2 is on its way for me. —- University Flake I do like, but it seems you enjoy more nicotine than I do. I’m a Granger nut but again, nicotine is nonexistent; I love it’s flavor. Let us know what you try and like. Always enjoy a good burley discussion.

on edit: I see that you’ve asked about Golden Extra. I used to be a huge MacBarren fan. Golden Extra is ok, a bit mild for you I think. It’s like an OTC. The Danes put a premium on cocoa and the tin note, oddly enough is floral. My favorites were Norwood and Burley London Blend over Golden Extra.

Ok, fair enough. I'll give them a shot

TBH, I don't pay attention to nicotine. I was a 23 year menthol cigarette smoker, then vaped for 4 years until giving that up early this year. I smoke mostly Va's and Vapers, so I've never really paid attention to nic levels. I honestly don't notice the nicotine at all, and I don't feel any really difference, nic-wise, between something like Irish Flake or 1792 Flake and say, OGS or Sutliff 1849 (love it!!!).

I'm putting together an order now, just got an SP ordered delivered on Monday, and I'm putting together another order, probably place it on Monday after going over it a few times. I'll put Golden Extra on the list, definitely

I'm also adding Grang's suggestions to my list to try. The Danish burleys do tend to be like a higher class OTC. I'm still exploring burleys also. I could have listed a bunch of other C&D stuff that I'm enjoying for it's just pure tobacco experience, but they tend to have more condimentals... which is cool, but... that wasn't what you asked for. But, once you get a taste for the burley, it makes all of these C&D blends more interesting... to me any ways.
Have fun exploring. Sometimes the journey is better than the destination.

I’m not into burley forward blends (yet …), but I have very positive feelings towards Golden Extra. Very well rounded and sweet with lots of chocolatey goodness (in a subtle way). You can’t go wrong with that one, especially if you want to ease into burleys.

I have a tin of HH Burley Flake that I’m excited to try. I just hope it doesn’t knock me over with nicotine because I’m a bit of a lightweight when it comes to vitamin N. It’s been known to give me the sweats and cause me to lay down for an hour.

I am a dark fired fan, and C&D Burley Flake #3 is super appealing to me. I have not tried the others. I didn't like haunted bookshop or pegasus at first. I like them with age on them, probably appreciate them more now regardless. I will continue to throw #3 in my cart when I order! If you like University flake, that was a gateway into appreciating Gawith and Hogarth: Bosun cut plug (I love clove), Ennerdale (it is just... special...) Bob's chocolate, dark unscented is probably close to Irish Flake, but I prefer brown unscented. I like the rum flake as well. They have good strength and good flavor at a good price when they are around.

Hmm.. It may be worth trying a tin of Petersons Irish Whiskey, if you don't like it I'd imagine it would be easy to trade.
Burley, Kentucky and a little Virginia in the background, and a little darker than the usual Virginia leaf

Although it's either a love it or hate it blend and doesn't get much mention here, now that I've finished my only tin lol
