I'm sure this has been done before, but thought I'd add my 2 cents' worth, to be followed. hopefully, by others'.
1. Petersons: Of my 70+- pipes, 12 are Petes, all but one P-lips, all delivering a clean, smooth absolutely dry smoke, and easy to clean.
2. Rattray's: I have 3 author shapes from them, and one panel billiard, nice thick bowls, great smokers, great feeling in the hand and mouth.
3. Savinelli: They have held their quality through the years, all at reasonable prices, beautiful pipes.
4. Brittania Executives: Great pipes at a bargain price.
5. My Mr Brog Cherry-wood, alas, apparently no longer available; smokes sweet, especially with McClelland's McRaspberry and Georgia Cream.
6. Stanwell: Most of mine were acquired years ago, all straight grains, lovely pipes.
7. GBD: Also some of my older pipes, including a 1985 Christmas pipe.
And, 8, in a special category all their own, mostly because of sentimental value, two Sasieni 4-dots, one that I acquired at Bacon's in Cambridge in 1980, and one generously sent to me by Brad (The Old Cajun.)
These are my old friends, that I turn to every day, for those special moments of relaxation and enjoyment. I am a lucky man indeed!

1. Peterson System p-lip - gotta love the dry smoke on my two Twain bents and the other 3 in my rotation.

2. Savinelli - one system, one Estella and one Autograph. The Estella & the Autograph have larger pot-type bowls that make smoking aros a pleasure.

3. Ascorti Business - I only have one but it's a beaut and smokes like a dream.

These seem to stand out the most of the brands I own.
1. Ben Wade by Preben Holm: I think because he produced some of the most beautiful freehands I've ever seen.
2. Savinelli: A good price range of pipes anyone can afford and still holding consistent quality standards.
3. Stanwell: As you mentioned nice grains and many styles to choose from.
4. Michael L. Kabik: Outstanding grain quality and a first of the USA Danish influenced freehand carvers.
5. Elliot Nachwalter: I own a few and they are some of the best pipes as far as smoking quality in not changing the taste of a blend. They seem to produce a sweeter smoke.
6. W.O. Larsen: Again, quality briar and unique designs.
7. Mastro de Paja: Nice quality sturdy smokers.
8. Chacom: Well made pipes and smooth smokers. The biggest French brand to date and all around one of the oldest pipe producers in the world! That statement says a lot for them as far as quality is concerned.

Favorite pipes in my stable : All my 10 or so meerschaums, Peterson's(most with P-Lips - got lots of those), Dunhills (just because), Charatan's Make, GBDs, Edwards, and then there's the Artisan pipes from Ryan Alden (lonestar) although each handcrafted pipe is dedicated to a certain tobacco so they don't see as much smoking time but I really like them. My favorite pipe of all of them is a Peterson meerschaum system so much so I had to order a new stem from 4noggins - hope it fits or I'll be borrowing one from another less deserving pete.

1. Scott Thile - The best American pipe maker today.

2. Joe Nelson - If Scott isn't the best American pipe maker today, then Joe is.

3. Grant Batson - He breathes new life into the craft; a unique vision.

4. Charles Cole - you may not have heard of him, but he's quietly making one of the finest pipes you'll ever smoke.

5. Nate King - worships at the church of precision. Wanna know how to make a proper pipe? Take a look at one of Nate's.

6. Wayne Teipen - On his website right now he has a traditional lovat, and he has a "hockey puck". This guy just loves making pipes.

7. Andy Petersen - He's not charging NEARLY enough for a top of the line pipe.

8. Ryan Alden - aka "Lonestar". In about 15 minutes the pipe world is going to realize that Ryan is the next cool pipe maker. Buy his pipes NOW.

Peterson - What's to say!

Milville - hand made by a master who is the son of a master pipe builder. If you are ever in London, seek him out if just for the conversation. As an aside, he also has a key to the loo in the church building. You have to go there, the bazaar not the loo, to understand.

Falcon - I can carry a week's worth of pipes, base and four bowls, in the pocket of my jacket when out doing my thing with the cameras.

Missouri Meerschaum - great value, mostly good smokers (no great loss they aren't) and no great loss if one breaks or falls into the river or septic system.

Dunhill - because of the cachet. Dunhill doesn't have a shape I can fall in love with, but there is no denying the beauty and the quality of these pipes. The two I've owned were great smoking, light and felt great in my hand.

My experience is fairly narrow, but these are my favorites. Dunhills are often very good pipes, but I don't get warm fuzzies about them. I've owned Ashtons and Upshalls that are equally good, but they're not my favorites, either. Likewise, older Kaywoodies are fantastic pipes, but my experience is limited. Here's the list:
1. Elliott Nachwalter -- Mostly I love the sensuous curves and his unique sense of shape, and while the quality varies on his middle period pipes (c.'79-'90), the pipes he's making right now are some of the best around.
2. Andrew Marks -- Andrew has a whimsical aesthetic, but some of his pipes are just gorgeous; best of all, he consistently makes probably the best smoking pipes I've ever had.
3a. Peterson -- I love the way they look and if (ahem) they're drilled properly, they make good pipes at a great price. (virtual tie with Stanwell)
3b. Stanwell -- Clean modern lines, perfect drilling and a great price -- what's not to love? My favorites are the distinctly Danish designs from the 60s and 70s.
4. Ryan Alden -- I only own one, but I expect I'll buy more. Ryan makes one of the best smoking pipes out there for a great price -- and he's only getting better. If I want to be sure of a trouble-free smoke, I grab my Alden pipe.
5. Bari -- This Danish make flies under the radar, but they're just as good as any Stanwell and can often be had for peanuts on the estate market.

Number one is probably not going to be a surprise.
1. Barling - Just fantastic smoking implements, completely deserving of mystique they enjoy.

2. Lee Von Erck - Without a doubt the best American artisan maker of my experience.

2. Nording - His top of the line pipes are superb

4. Spanu - Always smokes sweet

5. Kaywoodie - The pipes from the 1920's thru mid '30's feature superb briar.

6. Tatum - Whimsical design and excellent engineering. Too bad he's retired from pipe making.

7. Talbert - I especially enjoy his Ligne Bretagne pipes. For the money there's nothing better.

8. Comoy's - They could easily be higher in this list, but I just thought of them. Elegant proportions.

10. Fillenwarth - They're remarkably good pipes with spot on engineering and a wide open draw. Excellent value.

11. Tinsky - excellent smokers and well crafted.

12. Cannoy - Inventive, unique and well crafted.

13. Ehrlich - That damned pipe smokes as well as anything that I own.

14. Brebbia - Once I pulled out the condenser the pipe smoked like a dream.
There are others that I like but this list is long enough. Outside of the top three, the order could change on any given day. I also just got in a couple of Castello Occhio Di Pernice, but haven't fired them up. They're truly gorgeous pipes. If what I hear is true, I'm in for a treat.
