bigvan, no I don't really have a preference for filter pipes. I have never smoked one. But aren't most Savs besides the naturals, 6mm balsa filter pipes? I know they also make some 9mm balsa filter pipes too. The filters that came in my cobs get tossed into my pipe accessory tin, so I have not used one. From my understanding, all if not most of of the Vauen pipes (and many euro pipes) feature a 9mm filter. Most guys seem to just smoke them without, or insert the convertible adapter. That being said though, I would like a Brigham and would smoke it with its filter, from what I have gathered. They are lauded as being the only filter pipe where the filter does not detract from the smoke in any way. Basically, my short list was a lot less short, but most of my selections have sold out. My preference is more driven by price and shape. Upon starting in this, all I found pleasing to my eye were smooth finished bent stem pipes. Now that I have smoked a bit, straight styles are really starting to grow on me. Primarily I think because I can appreciate their no-nonsense simplicity and ease of maintenance. Who knows in a couple years I might be into rustic freehands...although I kind of doubt it. I submitted a "best offer" in eBay for a straight apple estate last night and missed it by $2. I have just submitted another "best offer" on another similar pipe for a ridiculously low price again, fingers crossed...
:P

roth, thanks for letting me know that those conversion tubes are not required. I am pretty sure I had read as much, but now I know for sure.
Brighams really appeal to me, being a Canadian (yeah I know they are made in Italy now) although you seem to be able to get a lot more pipe for the dollar from Savinelli than from Brigham. But yeah the consensus seems to be that pre-carb coatings are not really desirable. Makes one wonder why so many pipes are coming this way nowadays. Maybe too many uneducated newbs burning them out without a proper break in? There must be a reason, manufacturers don't add options unless it saves them in the long run...

Good article roth, I just read it. Now I have a conundrum to contemplate even prior to breaking in my pipe. To attempt to remove, or not to remove...

Chakraka, I'm Canadian too so I bought 2 Brighams. I'm also new (smoking for a month now) and I probably don't know the difference but the pre-carb hasn't taken awayany of the enjoyment I've had out of these pipes. I have an Algonquin 129 apple and it has already built a nice cake. Maybe the precarb helps for new idiots like myself who are likely doing everything wrong yet enjoying every minute of it!

robusthermit, thanks for the reassurance. I think I will wait until my next tobacco shipment comes it to break it in. Should be one long week. LOL
brdavidson, yeah I noted you were from Ontario. I think my favorite Brigham shapes are the x23 and x84. I am not sure why, but both of those caught my eye. How is the B&M situation out by you?

I have a voyageur 223 shap3, so I like that shape as well. I have great b&m right in my home town of Oshawa, called Victory Cigars. Only licensed Tobaccanist in Durham Region. Have a good supply of pipes, a decent amount of tobacco and they're expanding they're pipe section as the are selling tons in the last 6 months.

Sure is shiny. Good pick!
I think bigvan does have a point though, outward appearance really doesn't effect a pipe's smoking characteristics.
Welcome to the briar brotherhood, chakaraka

Very nice!
I've really enjoyed both of my Viking Classics so far - still breaking in the churchwarden, but the Bent Apple Sitter is a great smoker, near as I can tell. May yours do as well for you.
