After applying to my doctor a while ago to get home oxygen therapy to assist with my breathing issues my respiratory nurse suggested I try a nebuliser first. I already had a Salbutamol (Ventolin) inhaler that I felt made no difference at all so I was somewhat doubtful the Salbutamol nebules* would work.

Well she arrived this lunchtime with a spanking new German made Pari Boy Classic nebuliser, and a box of the nebules to go with it. I already knew how to use it as I had watched a few videos showing just that but I still had to listen to the lovely nurse Hannah explain everything to me as I suppose that is part of her job.

After the first go on the device (which took all of 5 minutes) I felt pretty much the same, however to see if it had any effect I had to perform a few simple exercises to see if my Oxygen readings had fallen as they usually did to around 55%. Well what a surprise, my first reading on the oximeter after the simple exercise was 74% and after being at rest for about five minutes this had shot up to 89%.....a level I have never reached before. I was impressed!

Just so long as this first effort is not just an aberration then I reckon my quality of life will go up from a miserable 2/10 to perhaps a liveable 5 - 6/10, that would be so nice as it would mean that I can start to do more complex tasks without nearly collapsing through shortness of breath :col:

It is now 4 hours since I first used it and my resting Oxygen saturation is an almost healthy 92%....wahay!

Regards,

Jay.

*Nebules are small plastic phials containing the liquid medication that the nebuliser converts into a very fine mist that is breathed in via either a mouthpiece or a mask. I prefer the latter.

it's really true that if you don't have your health you don't have anything. It might sound silly but I am happy to have had the minor (not life threatening and temporary) health issues I've had, it makes it a lot easier to appreciate things like having energy and not falling asleep at 8 o'clock and waking up in the morning feeling like I didn't get any sleep. Glad to hear you can start grabbing the bull by the horns again so to speak.

That's great your seeing positives from that nebulizer! Tried and true. One thing most people don't realize is that only 5% to 15% of the medicine actually gets to the lower lungs where it needs to be. I encourage you to focus on breathing techniques during treatments for optimal effects.

Does this mean you can start doing cardio?
Your lungs will grow in response to activity, and there are plenty of stories of guys well beyond retirement age learning to run marathons.
Being old isn't crippling, it just slows you down. All the principles for growth still apply to the human body as long as you're alive.

I was aware that much of the vapour escapes from the mask but never knew it was quite so little actually making it into my lungs.

And yes, my respiratory nurse has told me about different breathing techniques, I must heed them.

Jay.
