After less than 2 weeks (real quick for international shipping), my order arrived, and I received it today, first thing in the morning!
It couldn't be more of a birthday present -being only a day before- and I got really excited!
The grab bag contained 10 pipes, all with minor or a little more than minor defects, only on the outside of the chamber, so they seem to me completely smokable and attractive, in their own unique sense...
I got a bent Country Gentleman that just had a paler finish and a bit smaller chamber- I can compare with the regular Country Gent. I ordered alongside the grab bag- 5(!!!!) straight Legends, a few small white patches on the outer bowl being the only defect in a couple of them, an Eaton (well, a sample pipe, I can hardly put my thumb in the chamber!) with natural finish, a bent Washington the upper-outer chamber of which is almost broken on one side (ok, that I didn't like appearance-wise, but I can digest it, I had to expect a few more unpretty ones- it seems smokable) and 2 of Missouri Pride; the natural finish in both is almost torn, in one of them especially it is raggedy looking.
So far, I have tried 3 of my 5 Legends and the prettier Pride, and all were really smokable!
I haven't smoked cobs before, so I'm neither objective nor experienced as a 'judge', but I'm happy with my order!
I like my 'first' Country Gent. the most, such a big bowl, such great finish, just my kind of pipe!
I will break it in after I've had some experience with the seconds...
The Medico filters I think impart a funny taste, but they withhold some of the corny taste that appears to 'ghost' the tobacco in the first smokes (I'm actually thinking of building a cake, I now how most cobsmokers feel about it, but I will experiment; some with cake, some without!).
I hope my feedback gave you an idea of what you might find in a bag, and I recommend that you order one, especially if you are a briar smoker (or a new pipe smoker!) and want to see how cobs are!
You will not regret it.
And a question:
How frequently should I clean my cobs with alcohol?
I run alcohol-dipped cleaners in my briars after 4-5 bowls in total, is it good?
Should I do the same here?
I really can't afford more pipes for now, so I want to preserve them...
Thanks for reading!
