After less than 2 weeks (real quick for international shipping), my order arrived, and I received it today, first thing in the morning!

It couldn't be more of a birthday present -being only a day before- and I got really excited!

The grab bag contained 10 pipes, all with minor or a little more than minor defects, only on the outside of the chamber, so they seem to me completely smokable and attractive, in their own unique sense...
I got a bent Country Gentleman that just had a paler finish and a bit smaller chamber- I can compare with the regular Country Gent. I ordered alongside the grab bag- 5(!!!!) straight Legends, a few small white patches on the outer bowl being the only defect in a couple of them, an Eaton (well, a sample pipe, I can hardly put my thumb in the chamber!) with natural finish, a bent Washington the upper-outer chamber of which is almost broken on one side (ok, that I didn't like appearance-wise, but I can digest it, I had to expect a few more unpretty ones- it seems smokable) and 2 of Missouri Pride; the natural finish in both is almost torn, in one of them especially it is raggedy looking.
So far, I have tried 3 of my 5 Legends and the prettier Pride, and all were really smokable!

I haven't smoked cobs before, so I'm neither objective nor experienced as a 'judge', but I'm happy with my order!

I like my 'first' Country Gent. the most, such a big bowl, such great finish, just my kind of pipe!

I will break it in after I've had some experience with the seconds...
The Medico filters I think impart a funny taste, but they withhold some of the corny taste that appears to 'ghost' the tobacco in the first smokes (I'm actually thinking of building a cake, I now how most cobsmokers feel about it, but I will experiment; some with cake, some without!).
I hope my feedback gave you an idea of what you might find in a bag, and I recommend that you order one, especially if you are a briar smoker (or a new pipe smoker!) and want to see how cobs are!

You will not regret it.
And a question:
How frequently should I clean my cobs with alcohol?

I run alcohol-dipped cleaners in my briars after 4-5 bowls in total, is it good?

Should I do the same here?

I really can't afford more pipes for now, so I want to preserve them...
Thanks for reading!

Cobs are about as low maintenance as you can get. They can take a beating and still give a great smoke. I clean the stems with a pipe cleaner but not the bowl. I do scrape out the dottle but that's it and they will develop a cake pretty quickly so you should not be concerned there.Soemone once told me that a honey/brandy mixture to coat the bowl was a good thing but I could not bring myself to watse the brandy. I just load 'em, light 'em and love 'em. I have a Country Gentleman and Great Dane Egg. For the price you can't go wrong. Enjoy them.

I'm with papipeguy! I never do anything to my cobs but run a pipe cleaner through after smoking.

I'd throw out the filters.... Just smoke 'em!

I'm up to three cobs now I believe and love all of them. Almost no maintenance and great smokers plus wonderful for traveling, IMO. I toss the filter after the first smoke in a new one.

I got myself a Missouri corn cob about a week ago and I love it. Very easy to break in and a pleasant smoke. I am planning to get more to try out new tobacco's. So, far I have been putting it to a bit of abuse to see how it can handle it, and it's doing a pretty good job. I find it a great time saver as well compared to briars. Overall, if you want to try out new tobacco, give your other pipes some rest, or have a quick bowl, a corn cob definitely comes in handy.

I am very happy for you Jay. Cobs are so easy to maintain. A pipe cleaner is all ya need. I used to like cobs but now I love them. Upon what I have read from TopD the Old Cajun's advice to go with the 4 3/4 model Forever Stem took my cob smoking to a whole new level. a stem 3 to 4 times the cost of the pipe may sound expensive at first but that is the beauty of it. It will last ya forever! Give one a try. They're are two types, one for filtered pipes and one for unfiltered pipes. I am leary of posting the link but if you PM me or try a search on the forum for TopD's link or google you will find it.

How often you clean your cobs thoroughly really depends on if they are dedicated to a blend.
So you got less than 10 smokeable pipes? o.O I remember you said you bought the Country Gent in addition to the grab bag, right? So I counted less than 10.

gwtwdbss Thank you very much for your comment!

I´m actually aware of the forever stems, and was thinking of ordering one sooner or later...

I want to buy a churchwarden one, to make a cobwarden!
daytonsean

The prides smoke really cool!

Is it the natural finish?

Hey Bulldog Mick!

It turns out that our wishes for a Mac are yet to be realized... Next time!

Well, I actually got 10 cobs, and all of them seem smokable!

It's just that I have smoked only 5 of them so far (4 Legends and a Pride), and I can be sure only about that!

As for the Gent. I ordered alongside the bag, I'm trying to treat him like a lady, for fear of ruining such a great looking pipe...

I'm thinking of breaking it in only after I've had some experience with my 'second' cobs!

Oh, cobs save lives as well....
I gave away two of them to my cousin- a 'second' Country Gentleman and a Legend- who decided to give up cigarettes and start cobs, and I also gave a Legend to my younger sister, who enjoys the looks of pipes and a rare, really occasional bowl...
I kept the ones I liked the most, anyways...
I'm thinking of ordering again, this time a Mac and a couple of 'first' Legends!

Funny thing is I was so excited about the Gent., but I also was fascinated by the Legends when I got to see them in the 'flesh'...
A question:
Do the first cob bowls impart a funny corny taste and excessively heated smoke? I've heard of the 'cool smoke' that Missouri and actual Meerschaums are reputed to give off, still taking hot though !

Well, one Legend off which I've smoked 3 bowls now, is starting to get better...
Thanks for commenting Mick, you and all the above!

Thanks for your recommendations!

I think the glazed cobs definitely have a distinct aroma/flavour, but that might be just me. As for the cool smoke, I too haven't found them to be particularly cool, either. Then again, most of my cobs still aren't broken in since I only use 1 cob per blend and don't smoke the same blends each day.
P.S.: please check your PMs. ;)

:puffy: Wait a second, your name is Jay? That is my name also.
I picked up a cob about a month ago and have abused it ever since. The break in was quick. The smoke has been cool and the corny flavor went away fast. I got the eaton, it is an unfinished cob. Good for a quick smoke and that is all I have time for most of the time so it has been great. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.
