I don’t use it much- mainly because I don’t want to lose it- but I do love this pewter Gumby.
Made by Larry Blackett (Buttons for Your Britches), I picked it up at the St Louis show in ‘24.
Larry sells his hand made pewter tampers at most of the bigger pipe shows in the US, and his designs are constantly updated.
There’s always something new to see!

I’m a low-key Gumby fan, so this one was an instant buy!

Over the course of my pipe-smoking career I have had a variety of tampers, but somehow I always come back to my basic Czech tool.

I'm on my second one; the first literally vanished in a car that I was driving at the time. I took the interior apart looking for it, but to no avail. Perhaps it slipped into a black hole? The loss grieved me, as I had owned it for some 20-years.

I've had a lot of tampers over the years, but for the last 5 years this bamboo 8deco is the only one I use anymore. Long enough for any bowl, and the tamp end is cup shaped with holes in it so you can draw through it as you tamp. Not the greatest looking but works better than any of the others I have.

I am a big fan of most all the 8deco tamper designs. The lowly bamboo version might be one of the best as far as functionality goes. The metal end is also good for more aggressive removal of cake and the bamboo end for less aggressive removal of tobacco bits stuck to the side of the bowl. The diameter of the metal end also is small enough to be usable with the smaller pipe chambers.

Some new vendor started selling this god-tier tamper on amazon very recently. One machined piece of brass with knurling, no picks or anything inside. Flat not concave. Very heavy. $20ish dollars. I absolutely love it.

My favorite looking tamper is Time is Endless by Viktor Yashtylov. I use those tapered bamboo stick ones the most. I like the concave, thin foot with holes. It makes for the best minute adjustments and it’s really easy to scrape out Dottle. They’re like $5 at most. I give away a lot and leave em outside all the time.

Here’s the Viktor Yashtylov. It’s the most intricate pipe tamper I’ve seen really. Just got it a month ago. And the ones I use the most.
