Personally I benefited from his videos, and I would like to see him comeback. When I was starting out they were the only ones I could sit through, I learned a lot but I’m not surprised by the negative remarks his videos wouldn’t do much for the person who already knows everything about everything
I think he made as good of a video as one can make about such things.

I came across him by accident. Although I find his delivery a bit slow I really enjoyed the content. He struck me as a rather sensitive man(?). But if all the trolls etc have stopped him it's a great shame.

Just an observation: Things seemed to go south after the pc purchase scenario. I do not believe that he was prepared for some of the negativity that ensued.

That's my take on it. I theorize that video rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, myself included, and he pulled back out of shame. It's one thing to try and monetize content, but another to ask your followers to purchase a several thousand dollar piece of equipment for you, ostensibly to make more videos. 'specially when you have several thousand dollars worth of pipes and tobacco.

The tone of that PC video itself was just a little weird and pandering. I like his content a lot but that was a weird flex for him.

Isn't that what the Patreon ecosystem is though? You've got tons of folks who have donation support pages to produce content...product reviews, nude photos......mmmm, I think those two categories kind of cover it. No matter what I think of it.....thousands of people toss some fairly spicy sums at content creators to support them making more content. Maybe this Muttonchop cat just chose the wrong way to make the 'ask'.

Yeah, it is. Maybe it's because he seemed like a humble, decent, simple (in the best possible sense of the word) guy, and then suddenly had this sort of pity-party video saying his video quality wasn't working well and he needed a $2K PC to keep making videos but couldn't afford it. A couple people called him on the fact that his videos were perfectly fine, and he could get a new PC for like $300, and then he pulled the video down. But not before his followers actually raised the $2K.

I would've felt better if he'd said he lost his job and needed to put food on the table. But you're right -- Patreon patrons choose to support their people, which is their prerogative.

Did it? I don’t remember seeing any negative comments. I’ll have to go back and look.

I can see what you’re saying. The way he did it seemed disingenuous. However, he is a middle aged guy and doesn’t understand how YouTubers traditionally make money. The guy doesn’t have ads on any of his videos (which I commend, because the amount of low level YouTubers putting ads on their small channel to try to make a few bucks is hilarious), so I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt. I have a YouTube channel and I don’t put ads on it because I’m not at the point where I have thousands upon thousands of subscribers. It’s time consuming, but early on you should offer your content for free.

True. And to my knowledge YouTube hasn't allowed monetization of tobacco-related videos for several years now.

I remember seeing the video a day after he posted it, and there was maybe 80% support / "tell me where to send you money" and 20% WTH / "didn't see this coming" comments. My gut feeling was just that he was angling for the new PC for much more than making pipe videos, which is where it seemed fishy.

If you recall, he/his followers apparently got scammed by a donation site that did not give him the money. I really don’t want to dig into this because I think it was an embarrassment and I have nothing against the guy. I did have a real uncomfortable feeling about this “appeal“ myself.

I sent Chris money, and he refunded it. I can't recall the reason why, but he refunded many donors at the time. Another recollection I have is that he did not ask for these funds, and that it was someone else's idea- Can someone confirm? In any case, anyone able to accurately assess a person's character (I pride myself as one of those) can see that he comes from a place of integrity.

Was he one the lucky ones who was making money off of the videos? You know, like those teenagers who make fashion videos and get paid to market products. I don't know what they are called... influencers, or something like that.
That term, 'Influencers', makes me want to bang my head against the wall. To me, that's like saying, 'My career goal is to NOT work but hit the lottery and be a millionaire'.

This is how I see it. He didn't ask for money, and he doesn't even monetize his YouTube channel. He has zero ads, which is very commendable in a time where people are reposting videos that aren't even their own and slapping ads on them.

Goodness! We start of worrying about someone and before you know it the poor fellow has suddenly become Blofeld! Can you imagine if he had been ill or worse? By page 5 we would have members wondering if it was a scam for the Life Insurance. To quote Joe Biden...'Come on folks'. Lets just be happy he is OK and not ill with this Bat Flu to quote the other fellow. As an after thought where is Scranton, NJ!
