I have noticed that mould/mold likes to grow on leather. Leather products use leather dye. And if i am not mistaken, pipemakers use leather dye on rustication work. This could be the reason why the rusticated part of the pipe was fully covered, and the smooth part stayed clear. If this is true, then it is only a surface problem and it would be fine to clean it up and use it again.

I know he did, i was just supporting his decision to do so.
I mentioned the leather dye because a few months ago, there were 3 items that had mould starting to grow on them.
1) Leather bag

2) Leather wrapped pipe

3) Rusticated pipe
So i made an assumption from this observation. Of course, i can be mistaken.

Just to clarify (and repeat), the reason the smooth part was free of mould was due to it having a coat of varnish or somesuch, certainly not just wax polished.
I will at some point give it a coat of Kiwi's finest black shoe polish then buff it up.....that usually works.
Still smoking well.....

Jay.
