Making this a positive thread because pipe smoking is quite the enjoyable hobby and habit but with all that’s going on lately with everything moving so quickly, hypothetical:

Say you check in with your doctor, they run some diagnostics and you eventually find out you are ill or possibly worse- would you continue to smoke and enjoy your pipe and possible other things(liquor, coffee, cocaine:eek:) if your body so chooses to permit it without too manyside effects?

We never hear of people who go on smoking and drinking... well maybe sigmund Freud, and Sammy Davis junior;)

What do you say?

I personally have abstained in the past with minor health issues and found that it made quality of my life worse, but I can see how say a sole cigarette smoker would feel alleviated by cutting down or getting of the inhalation mechanism

I think of life in terms of seasons. I’m enjoying the history of pipes and history of tobacco use right now, but maybe not later.

And , I see people with dementia who are otherwise healthy. They don’t know they children. And, I’ve known healthy people develop a brain CA.

I say live in the moment. Enjoy what you choose to enjoy.

Life situation is probably the determining factor. If one is young and has a young family you must make the responsible choice. As one grows older a cost benefit analysis is probably appropriate. Does, for example, my enjoyment of pipesmoking and the relaxation it provides outweigh the realistic risk for me? As Dave Portnoy, the Barstool sports guy, says in all his video pizza reviews: "one bite everybody knows the rule".
I am reminded of an old George Jones song:
My doctor told me,George you better start Slow'n it down,
But there are more old drunks than there old doctors
So I guess we'd better have another round.

In my very personal opinion, I am a strong believer in "balance". I have come to enjoy pipe smoking very very much. On the other hand I am also an extremely health conscious person. My diet is superior, imo, to what the majority of the population consume. I also excersise HARD for 45 min a day, and have an active job as a carpenter. Does the healthy side of my lifestyle cancel out the pipe smokings negative health effects? Yes. Yes it does.

I'm a moderate (one bowl a day) pipe smoker, and quit when I'm healing from anything. I wouldn't be stubborn if it were necessary to put pipes aside to extend my time. There is always a balance between what you enjoy and what you do for health. At some point, most of us quit running, to extend the lives of our hip and knee joints. Most people taper the amounts of their food and drink to a degree. To stay engaged with life and interested, you have to do things that enhance your daily experience. So that's the balance.

Nobody knows until they’re in that situation. If terminal, then perhaps you stay the courses. However, if there is a chance of survival, then perhaps you alter your behavior. It also depends on the condition where you might be too sick to enjoy those vices. I have observed love ones who’ve passed away from cancer, and none of them where dwelling on this… particularly in the later stages.

Not saying this to tell anyone what to do. Do what makes sense to you and what strikes you as balanced.

However, though we don't inhale, some smoke ends up in the lungs, and they complain. It took 10 years for me to begin hearing that complaint, so that was 2011, but it took until 2018 to quit.

Meanwhile the tar and nicotine not excreted must go somewhere-liver? From what I know (not much) they pass through the mouth's mucous lining with ease.

The long and short of it is that for love of smoking, I continued a good 5 years too long.

One of my most frequently used expressions these days (other than "Which blend should I try today?") is, "I wouldn't be caught dead at a _______!"

Doctor's office is first on that list, so it's a moot point. Buncha licentious criminals kowtowing to corporate dogma. But to the OP, I see what you're trying to deduce here. The Bukowski quote @cosmicfolklore shared pretty much sums it up for me, and I can't be the only one who feels that way. Otherwise, the species is doomed for sure.
