I'm not an expert but I find it nearly impossible to diagnose mold vs. plume vs. other deposits from unmagnified cell phone photos. I use the rule of thumb that under magnification if it's fuzzy it's mold, if it's sparkly (like sugar) it's plume. I don't smoke anything that has active mold on it, and if I'm not convinced one way or the other I won't smoke it either.

Try brushing it off. If it comes off easily, probably not mold. You could also look at it under a magnifying glass.

Or just go ahead and smoke it, free penicillin. Life hacks doctors don't want you to know...

In all of my experience with mold in tins and jars, the tobacco will definitely smell like mold, not tobacco. I've never had a question. You would be able to smell the mold if it were mold.

When in doubt, throw it out. Why would anyone chance it if it "probably" isn't mold? 2 years later "Whoops, Doc, I think I might know where I caught this infection..."

Mould or Plume? That is the never ending question.
Perhaps the blenders should include a magic dipstick or mould testing kit in their tins & pouches. It would be of great help I’m sure.

Just saw someone post on FB that their jar had substantial mold. Mind you, it wasn’t straight from the tin.
