Anyone own one of these? Just wondering what kind of issues, blemishes, etc. one can expect from these pipes.

Unless there is something I don't know, Irish seconds would mean Peterson seconds. I've never encountered these as such. All of my Petersons are stamped and sold under the brand. There are no secondary brands or unstamped pipes that I have knowingly seen for sale.

However, I have bought at least one unfinished bent Dublin that was not part of any familiar series and didn't exactly resemble any Peterson shape I'd seen before, and it was priced decidedly lower than even the lower end Petes. But it is a good pipe, light weight, ample chamber, and good looking, if not quite as hefty in design as my other Petes, other than the extra small Belgique.

I'd be interested to know if there are Pete seconds on the market and where they are sold. I'm not shopping for additional Petes, since I have quite a few, but I am always interested in the pipe market per se, as part of the fascination of pipe smoking.

Irish Seconds are often fully stamped and finished pipes of another line, I just saw one the other day that was a Baskerville with the sherlock silver band and all, fully stamped with the additional "Irish Seconds" stamp. This leads me to only one conclusion. That, whatever defects they poses are not clearly evident until the very final stages of QC, which would in turn make them very minor defects. I think they can be a great value especially on hard to find shapes, or shapes you might be reluctant to plop down Natural Supreme money for due to indecision. They should be perfectly servicable smokers whatever the case.

I always learn something on Forums. Where are these Irish Seconds sold? I shop pipes mostly online, and I haven't encountered them.

I wonder if this is part of new ownership by Laudisi of the Peterson brand. Or do they pre-date that? I like to follow the business side of pipes.

They have been around for years, since the Rogers imports day at least.

From SP.eu : "
If you've ever been to any kind of "outlet" store, you're already more or less familiar with what seconds are. Products that — due to some minor cosmetic flaw — just don't pass a manufacturer's quality control process. When these cosmetic flaws don't affect the function or durability, they generally get sold at a deep discount. Not ideal for the manufacturer, but it's great news for you, the customer.

And that's exactly what we have here — pipes produced right here in Ireland, fully functional, eminently smokeable, and heavily discounted due to some superficial blemish. Irish Seconds are graded from 1 to 3, with 1 being the highest quality, and 3 being the deepest discount. If you're in the market for a shop pipe, just getting into pipes, or are generally more budget minded, these are hard to go past. "

Back history from PetersonPipeNotes:

Irish Seconds – Peterson Pipe Notes - https://petersonpipenotes.org/tag/irish-seconds/

I have two labeled "Erica" s and one "Irish Second" -they have some cosmetic flaws or a fill or two but otherwise are as good smokers as any Peterson pipe. They were bought back in the 80s and 90s as basket pipes none of them over $25. Today they are more expensive.

Sounds like these go way back. I haven't run into them in person, at pipe shops or shows, or online. Or I didn't notice them. They may track them, in distribution, to avoid competing with themselves, so they don't turn up everywhere. Anyway, at least if I run into them, I'll have an idea what I'm seeing. Thanks.

I have an Irish Second from smokingpipes.eu. It's a 303 silver spigot and is a fantastic smoker. The only thing I could find wrong with it is a slight bump located at the top of the rim which you can sort of see in the third photo of this set. It actually looks more pronounced in person but is actually quite minimal. They are graded 1-3 from best to worst quality on the SP site. This one was graded "1". I imagine they are solid smokers just like any standard Pete but they all have some small superficial blemish.

I had one when I first got into pipe smoking that I got from a local b&m near me. I never had any issues with it and it smoked just as good as some of my other, more expensive pipes.

As for any visual flaws or fills, I honestly did not know enough back then to really check. All I knew was I could afford it, I liked the shape and the color.

Passed it along to a friend about a year or so ago that was getting into the habit and, to my knowledge, still uses it.

Wish I could remember more specifics, but if you are mainly worried about how it smokes, I say you dont have anything to worry about.

Thanks for the pic! It's good to see you posting again as I thought you might have left the forum. Also, I didn't realize until now that you could also be the Brooklyn Peterson Club with all those nice Petes!

I took a bit of a hiatus from the pipe and posting during the winter but now that spring is here, I'm back in the saddle. You make a good point about my fondness for Petes. Maybe I'll start a subchapter of the club! :)

I have one Irish Second. It was an economy pipe from the 1980s. Probably in the $20 to $25 range. I liked the shape and purchased it for a fishing pipe. These days it is in my regular rotation because it smokes quite nicely. Sorry for the quick cell phone photos, but at least you get the idea.

Bought one last summer at their home shop for the wife’s father - never did figure out what the defect was, if any. Nice pipe and he loves it.

There was a somewhat recent thread on Irish Thirds (or should that be Irish TURDS - the Irish pronunciation) :ROFLMAO:
Whether they are good value or not would depend on their pricing, of course
