I would never say that I am ambivalent of Mixture #79. I wrote a neutral review because it is known to be a polarizing blend. My reviews and ratings of blends do not reflect my personal opinions. I gave dispassionate details of my experience with that blend for that reason, and gave it two stars to reflect that polarization so people could make up their own minds about it. There's nothing else to read into it.
Well, pardon me. It's not as if I had your review in front of me. I didn't read anything into it. The clue is I said: "as I recall".

One of the few blends I really dislike.

I like Lakeland blends and other strongly flavored blends like Warhorse but there’s something about the combination of flavors in 79 that really doesn’t work for me. Just goes to show how everyone’s experience with a blend is different.

love it but I couldn't say I see it having wide appeal. It's a very particular blend. Medicinal is the best description I can come up with.

It reminds me of chewing on a fresh snapped Birch twig. In a good way. Woody and birch flavored with some vanilla lurking. For me it’s very evocative of old timey things. I’m not a frequent aromatic smoker but I really enjoy Mixture 79. It’s great with a Sazerac. I never had the older version but if the new version lost the floral flavoring that’s a win in my book.

good call. Yeah it does have that quality. Makes me wonder how many people who like this blend have done that exact thing. It does also have a very old time feel to it. You know this isn't something made for the modern palate.

I was eating some black jellybeans this morning and thought that they taste like Mixture 79. An hour later I smoked a bowl of 79 and bingo, I nailed the flavor. Eating those black jellybeans and following it up with a bowl of 79 really enhanced the flavor of 79. By the way I enjoy Mixture 79 and have since I first smoked it over 50 yrs ago. Another suggestion, for those who dip (moist snuff), try some Grizzly Mint or Stokers Mint. Leave it in your lip for 30-45 minutes, then smoke a bowl of Mixture 79. Pure Heaven IMO.

I get less licorice and more anise but they're both so similar.

This works great. I could never take Mixture 79 straight, but liked the flavoring. I cut it with Mac Baren's Extra, roughly one-to-one.
I think I like it so much because it was what my Grandfather smoked(at work, and outside. My Grandmother was a hater and would not let him smoke it in the house ?). 30 years after he died, I got his pipe collection, and that pipe STILL smelled of it.

And it was the first tobacco I personally ever tasted, even though it was different back then. Medicinal, birch, anise...all good descriptors. And it's definitely an acquired taste!
