Regardless of the issue with the form of the tobacco, this is a very good blend. The red Virginia leaf really shines through and the mix of oriental, latakia and perique taste condimental to me and are perfectly complimentary. I find the red Virginia is better and more prominent in the Special Reserve. I think this and the Plum Pudding Special Reserve are two brilliant blends and have cellared 3.5 pounds of each.

Can you fold and stuff? If not I'm not sure how to consider it a flake. And mine would disintegrate into small pieces if folded.
Your point is well taken.
The “flake” in my tin looks more like what I think of as flake than the contents of your tin did. But they are still too fragile to really fold and stuff in the conventional sense (which sucks). That said I’ve got no complaints about the taste.

I'm sure many have been smoking far longer than I have... but for the whole duration of my time smoking pipes, I've loved flake and plug tobaccos. From G&H, SG, Germain's, STG, K&K and many others.

I would never call these "flakes". It's a sliced crumble cake surely. It just doesn't behave remotely like a traditional flake.

That's not to say it's bad though. I find crumble cakes themselves to be very convenient, and having them pre-sliced into portions is even more convenient.

But flakes, no. Call them as you may, but I don't think I can (in good conscience) bring myself to refer to these as flakes.

But whatever odd marketing choices they're using; It doesn't change the fact that I really enjoy MR and PP (especially the Special Reserve PP). Some of the finest tasting tobacco money can buy.

Obviously we're all just being pedantic here but I agree with @hoosierpipeguy here.

These companies have been playing it fast and loose with the naming conventions. While we're at it, we can play the Balkan vs English vs Scottish vs American Blend game too.

I've found all of SPC's "flakes" to be more "crumble cakes" - definitely intended to be rubbed out, which is a shame because I think fold-n-stuff is a great technique for some newbies who have a tendency towards packing too tightly.

I am not sure of anyone else has posted this, because... well... I am too damn lazy to read the whole thread. But, I've had this before I could have sworn it was a real flake. I am absolutely sure. Did they change it? Or, if this a SNAFU at the Sutliff factory?
I'd be popping those other 6 tins to see.
This was the first release, you must have some major influence with SPC to get an early sample.
