Paging @CaptJ .

Welcome aboard from Metro Detroit. The Michigan presence is strong here, as evidenced by this thread.

Sad day for the Spartans, by the way. I used to cook for Coach Izzo regularly at the Evergreen Grill in East Lansing, off of Abbott (former post office, then PanTree, and now Dublin Square). Medium well steak and some wine was the standard order.
Yes, very sad for the Spartans but very cool to hear you cooked for Izzo.

Thanks for the thread tag!
Not originally a Michigander myself. Spent most of my childhood in Northern IL (Not Chicago. Although being the 2nd or 3rd to last stop on the Metra, still a city suburb, though distant).
Went college in MI though and got a job here post college and been doing my best to make it home ever since. Living in the Detroit suburbs right now but would love to get a little further out. Maybe some day.

Paul's has been my usual go to with Arrowhead and Darwin Asa probably being my favorites from them. I did finally check out Campbell's last year. Sadly couldn't linger and enjoy a smoke with them but maybe next time. Nice guys and quite helpful. Grabbed their Heavy English, Scottish, and Balkan blends. Still trying to figure out their nuances but seem to enjoy the aftertaste of the English the most?

Saved another thread for other MI pipe shops. Hope to eventually visit them.

Happy smoking!

The younger shopkeep suggested Campbell's is known for English blends, opposed to Paul's with aromatics.

If I recall, the Christmas blend was decent. Doc McCallum (I think I got that right) is a mild aromatic and Old Onyx was my go to blend in undergrad.

Here's a partial list of Campbell's house blends (and they ship): Pipe Tobacco | - https://campbellssmokeshop.com/pipe-tobacco/

Hey guys, it’s Josh who is the guy there. #1 and #2 not listed are Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake and Bulls Eye (I may have flipped the #’s). I’m not sure if he blends the others himself or it’s rebadged bulk. Josh is planning to expand the tin selection, he has had unavailable elsewhere tins

Thank you for reminding of Josh's name.

But for the little bit of grey hair, he hasn't aged or changed a bit.

Yeah, Josh is a very youthful looking guy. I think it’s his occupation that keeps him young.

Do you guys know if there are any other rebagged blends? I’d love to try more of their tobaccos but not the rebagged ones.

I haven’t tried anything but #11 Tweed (not bad) which is a Scottish and #14 which is a choco burley (nope). I’m not savvy enough in bulk blenders to tell you if it’s rebagged. Josh seems pretty straight up so in conversation I’m sure he would tell you what’s what if you asked. You have more pipe and pipe tobacco knowledge than he does I would venture (not trying to be a jerk).

Ask Josh. He's seemingly honest.

They had a jar of coin cut tobacco, which I thought was impressive for a small shop/blender. It was on a different shelf than the other house blend jars. Josh confirmed it ways Bulls Eye when asked.

If I recall (and I could be mistaken and don't want it considered gospel), Josh said they get have their blends mixed elsewhere.

I can tell you the Doc M. and Old Onyx have a certain essence about them similar to Sutliff "new car" smell (likely the PG), so if ordered somewhere else it would be the same place. But I have not seen a bulk blend similar to Old Onyx.

Thanks for the thoughts. Yeah, I’ll just ask him the next time I’m there.

Drove over to my youngest daughter's in Jackson yesterday. Daughter number two was up from downstate Illinois with her hubby and my youngest grandson - age three months - for a "meet the baby" party. A Ropp Vintage like this one, loaded with Low Country Natural Virginia, kept me company on the way there and back.

Paul's has a number of blends they do not put on their website list...
