Hate to revive this thread but I just received a meer from Paykoc and I smoke maybe 2 bowls a day spaced a long time apart and take great care of it and I am noticing a gnarly spidering crack going through the carving. I just emailed them so let’s hope they can help me out

Are you getting it hot when smoking?

I

I use the breathe method for the most part while smoking. It rarely if ever gets hot.
If you're blowing smoke back through the pipe with every draw a la muttnchop, that may overheat it enough to crack, but some meerschaum can have natural internal flaws that come to the surface when heated.

As you can see in the picture it is very deeply line carved. I assume expansion and deep carving just didn’t work out on this pipe. I was a glass blower for many years making pipes I should’ve known better. Next pipe will be a not carved classic church warden. Guess I have a reason to go buy it now. Thankfully the crack is still air tight and hasn’t gone into the bowl so I’ll use it till it breaks. Sucks though I loved this pipe. I guess I’ll be more careful next time *shrug*

Still likely a fluke. Even heavily carved ones can last for many years. This fellow's been heavily smoked for a few years now and even dropped a few times with no damage.

I am now on my second pipe from Paykoc. Both had the same carving, both cracked in nearly the same place. I may have smoked the first one too hot, but absolutely did my best on my second. I have added more pipes to my collection to allow more time between smoking my Paykoc meer, and it still cracked. They quickly replaced my first one, and have offered me a 30% off my next purchase so I feel the customer service side of the equation was great! However I think I will save up and spend a bit more on one the brands mentioned earlier. I have superglued it and continue to smoke it and haven’t seen any worsening of the crack so far though. That said I love the smoking quality of a meerschaum and eagerly await the day when I can afford to buy something hopefully better.
